coronavirus diagnosis last week, President Trump has received a variety of cutting-edge treatments, including an experimental polyclonal antibody infusion administered at the White House last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>But the president, who returned to the White House on Monday after being treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and reported no symptoms Tuesday, is also taking a cocktail of seemingly routine over-the-counter supplements and medications.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/virus-outbreak-melania-trump-archive-f1ef1f03cdd92fa83618ed34a3ea5ddb\">A recent memorandum<\/a> from Trump physician Sean Conley noted that \u201cthe President has been taking zinc, vitamin D, famotidine, melatonin and a daily aspirin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, with 210,000 deaths in the US and 1.04 million worldwide, can Trump\u2019s drugstore-available meds aid others in the treatment of COVID-19?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s still unclear, according to Dr. Bruce Farber, the chief of infectious diseases at Northwell Health\u2019s North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no evidence that any over-the-counter medication is active in treating or preventing COVID,\u201d Farber told The Post, adding that patients should always contact their doctors before taking any new supplements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this [regimen] is somewhat unique to [Trump],\u201d Farber added.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what we know so far about these supplements and how they might help treat the potentially deadly bug.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Aspirin\"><\/span><strong>Aspirin<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If there\u2019s one pill that stands out to Farber, it\u2019s aspirin. The painkiller and blood thinner has long been part of treatment plans for those with histories of heart attacks or strokes.<\/p>\n<p>Coronavirus \u201cdramatically increases the risk of spontaneous blood clots,\u201d said Farber. \u201cThat\u2019s part of COVID\u2019s MO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople with COVID who are sick should be on some [anti-clotting] medication, and that could be aspirin,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04365309\">COVID-related aspirin trial<\/a> at Xijing Hospital in China earlier this year hypothesized that early use of aspirin would \u201creduce the incidence of severe and critical patients\u201d; however, that study\u2019s results have not yet been posted.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16409155\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img class=\"size-nypost-large-desktop-uncropped wp-image-16409155 lazyload\" alt=\"Physician to the President Doctor Sean Conley, joined by members of the President's medical team.\" width=\"662\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/trump-vitamin-explainer-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/trump-vitamin-explainer-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/trump-vitamin-explainer-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/trump-vitamin-explainer-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=662 662w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/trump-vitamin-explainer-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1324 1324w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 662px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span>Presidential physician Dr. Sean Conley, joined by members of the president\u2019s medical team<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Best Image \/ BACKGRID<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Famotidine\"><\/span><strong>Famotidine<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Famotidine, more commonly known as the over-the-counter heartburn medication Pepcid, has also been the subject of recent research.<\/p>\n<p>According to a September hospital study from Connecticut\u2019s Hartford HealthCare, COVID patients who took famotidine were <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hartfordhealthcare.org\/about-us\/news-press\/news-detail?articleId=28305&amp;publicid=497\">45 percent less likely<\/a> to die in the hospital, as well as 48 percent less likely to require a ventilator to breathe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrent thoughts are that it may lessen the hyperimmune inflammatory response,\u201d said cardiologist Dr. Raymond McKay, the study\u2019s primary investigator, who added that the results ought to be considered preliminary and that the specific reasons for these positive outcomes were still theoretical.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Zinc\"><\/span><strong>Zinc<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Zinc, an over-the-counter mineral, is known to regulate the immune system and metabolism.<\/p>\n<p>According to preliminary research from doctors working in a Barcelona hospital, patients with lower zinc levels <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2020-09-zinc-blood-death-patients-covid-.html\">were more likely to die<\/a> from the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Older people and others more susceptible to COVID, such as those with a heart condition or diabetes, may also have lower zinc levels due to diet or lower absorption levels, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/trump-takes-zinc-maybe-you-should-too-11601916665\">a recent Wall Street Journal column,<\/a>\u00a0\u201cTrump Takes Zinc.
