\n As the music world mourns the loss of legendary rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen, who died this week of throat cancer at 65, a claymation cheeseburger is trending in his honor.<\/p>\n

Fans on the internet have dug up<\/a> one of the Van Halen\u2019s most confusing music videos, for the song \u201cEverybody Wants Some!!\u201d<\/a> \u2014 an animated dream sequence that app<\/a>eared in the 1985 flick \u201cBetter Off Dead,\u201d starring John Cusack. The dark comedy follows down-and-out teenager Lane Meyer who hopes to manipulate his ex-girlfriend into taking him back by trying to take his own life over and over.<\/p>\n

The scene depicts Cusack\u2019s character, a lowly sandwich slinger at the fictional diner Pig Burger, reimagined as a mad food scientist who miraculously animates \u2014 \u00e0 la Frankenstein\u2019s monster \u2014 a singing, guitar-playing hamburger who is apparently very hot for a lady burger.<\/p>\n

As the scene was originally written, \u201cBetter Off Dead\u201d writer-director Savage Steve Holland had borrowed an urban myth from his own experience as a fast-food service worker during his teenage years, according to a 2011 interview<\/a> with the filmmaker in Entertainment Weekly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was this rumor that a rat fell into a vat at a chicken place, and somebody got served fried rat,\u201d he recalled. \u201cThat was what I had in the original script.\u201d<\/p>\n

When producers decided the rat bit was a bit too macabre \u2014 in a movie featuring repeated attempts at suicide, no less \u2014 Holland found inspiration, of all places, in a political spoof.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw this guy Jimmy Picker had made this really funny claymation short film about mayor Ed Koch called \u2018Sundae in New York.\u2019 I was like, \u2018If I could do something like that and still incorporate it into a hamburger scenario,\u2019\u2009\u201d said Holland.<\/p>\n

The spectacle of burgers dancing to the tune of \u201cEverybody Wants Some!!,\u201d a song which didn\u2019t even appear on the soundtrack, has become, not surprisingly, the film\u2019s most memorable.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just so, so out there and stupid, that everybody was really worried about it,\u201d Holland said of the movie studio\u2019s response to the first screening.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it was the highest testing thing when we went to the test audience. They thought that was the greatest thing in the whole movie,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
