\n Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris landed the cover of Elle magazine\u2019s November issue, discussing what \u201cjustice\u201d means to her as a former prosecutor.<\/p>\n

The interview<\/a> kicks off with the US senator recalling how her fight for civil rights began as a baby, when her parents took her to a civil rights march in Oakland.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother tells the story about how I\u2019m fussing and she\u2019s like, \u2018Baby, what do you want? What do you need?\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I just looked at her and I said, \u2018Fweedom.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Harris\u2019 views on justice is the theme<\/a> that runs throughout the piece, which hits news<\/a>stands on Nov. 3, with journalist Ashley C. Ford asking what that means to the former long-serving San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about freedom, it\u2019s about equality, it\u2019s about dignity,\u201d Harris responded. \u201cWhen you achieve equality, and freedom, and fairness, it\u2019s not because I grant it to you. It\u2019s because you fought for it because it is your right.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not about benevolence or charity; it is about every human being\u2019s God-given right. What do we collectively do to fight for that? That\u2019s what justice represents to me \u2014- it\u2019s about empowerment of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harris, the first black and Indian-American woman to accept the Democratic nomination for vice president, went on to explain that she was raised to learn that justice \u201cis not about charity and benevolence, it\u2019s about your duty.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one\u2019s going to congratulate you for it \u2014 it\u2019s what you\u2019re supposed to do,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Harris, 55, whose parents are Indian and Jamaican immigrants, also recalled how she was expected to fight for what she believed in at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you sit at the dining table and you want to say something, you\u2019d better be prepared to defend it, no matter how old or young you are,\u201d the senator said.<\/p>\n

Harris\u2019 cover was unveiled Tuesday, the day before she was set to hit the debate stage with Vice President Mike Pence.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
