\n Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer isn\u2019t worried about Big Tech being broken up following a scathing House panel report that compared four of Silicon Valley\u2019s biggest firms to \u201coil barons and railroad tycoons.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with CNBC<\/a>, Ballmer expressed confidence in App<\/a>le, Amazon, Facebook<\/a> and Google\u2019s ability to remain intact amid antitrust legal challenges, citing his experience steering Microsoft through a similar storm some 20 years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll bet money that they will not be broken up,\u201d Ballmer, who now owns the Los Angeles Clippers, said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would certainly recommend to all these tech companies to engage on the issues now, to engage with the regulators now,\u201d he added. \u201cI don\u2019t think they can just take unilateral action and expect it to satisfy whatever it is some regulator or congressman will decide they should have done. The key is to engage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ballmer added that his belief that the companies would not be broken up does not mean that lawmakers won\u2019t try, citing the Justice Department\u2019s short-lived order that Microsoft split in two.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I read the concerns \u2014 just me as a non-antitrust lawyer reader \u2014 I read the concerns and I don\u2019t even think this notion of breaking them up answers most of the questions that people are raising, or many of the complaints they\u2019re raising,\u201d Ballmer said.<\/p>\n

The House Judiciary Committee\u2019s antitrust panel on Tuesday released its 450-page report on the market dominance of the biggest names in tech, who together boast a market value of more than $5 trillion.<\/p>\n

\u201cCompanies that were once scrappy, underdog startups that challenged the status quo have become the kinds of monopolies we last saw in the era of oil barons and railroad tycoons,\u201d the report reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese firms typically run the marketplace while also competing in it \u2014 a position that enables them to write one set of rules for others, while they play by another,\u201d the report added, saying that the companies \u201cengage in a form of their own private quasi regulation that is unaccountable to anyone but themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

The committee\u2019s report \u2014 penned by the panel\u2019s Democratic majority \u2014 describes a \u201cpressing need for legislative action and reform,\u201d but stops short of calling for the break-up of the companies.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
