\nWhile it might seem like the tension between Prince Harry<\/strong> and Prince William<\/strong> only exploded within the past few years, it\u2019s actually rooted in their upbringing.<\/p>\n

In a new excerpt published in People<\/em> from Battle of Brothers: William & Harry \u2013 The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult<\/em> by Robert Lacey<\/strong>, a British historian and biographer who also serves as a consultant on Netflix<\/strong>\u2018s The Crown<\/em>, we\u2019re hearing more about how their royal childhood impacted their \u201cdamaged\u201d relationship today.<\/p>\n

Lacey wrote of their rift:<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth brothers have been damaged by their upbringings; both have reacted by finding different solutions. There is so much pain and trauma in this story, going right back to the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Though the brothers \u201cwere raised to be close and protective of each other,\u201d tensions began as William began to be prepped for his role as future monarch with the help of Kate Middleton<\/strong>, while his younger bro didn\u2019t have much of a defined role. However, when Harry found Meghan Markle<\/strong>, the father of three was cautious about their romance moving too fast:<\/p>\n

\u201cFundamental to the whole saga is the clash of love versus duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Now residing in different countries, there could be a \u201cpotential tragedy\u201d if they don\u2019t reconcile once and for all:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis compares with Edward VIII<\/strong>\u2019s abdication in 1936 and the death of Princess Diana<\/strong> in 1997. It\u2019s of that scale. And it\u2019s a challenge that\u2019s yet to be resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In a previously published excerpt of the book from the Daily Mail<\/em>, we heard more from Lacey about how negotiations at the so-called Sandringham Summit ahead of Harry and Meghan\u2019s move from the UK went:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Queen<\/strong> concluded that the four of them \u2014 Harry, William, [Prince<\/strong>] Charles<\/strong> and herself \u2014 should sit down with their respective private secretaries at Sandringham the following Monday to hash things out, though William confided to a friend that he would much rather leave all the haggling to the staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He added:<\/p>\n

\u201cWilliam maintained his distance for the Sandringham summit. The Queen had suggested the family should gather for lunch before their big pow-wow in the library that afternoon, but he refused his grandmother\u2019s invitation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As you\u2019ll recall, their strained relationship was evident just before Megxit was announced when there was no photo of Meghan, Harry, and Archie<\/strong> near the Queen during her annual Christmas broadcast in 2019:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was unheard of for the royal Christmas desk not to feature a cosy image of the latest royal grandchild or great-grandchild. But in 2019 there was no sight of Harry and Meghan\u2019s six-month-old son, Archie.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
