\n They weren\u2019t hot for Eddie Van Halen.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Senate once watched the late guitar god\u2019s music video \u201cHot for Teacher\u201d at a hearing about too much sex, violence and Satanism in rock music.<\/p>\n

During the Sept. 19, 1985, meeting, the Senate Commerce Committee tuned into the mildly steamy footage \u2014 which showed a bespectacled student fantasizing about his teacher in a bathing suit as the rocker wailed.<\/p>\n

Amusing footage of the so-called \u201cporn rock\u201d hearing recirculated online Tuesday after news<\/a> broke of Eddie Van Halen\u2019s death, tweeted out by C-SPAN<\/a> Communications Director Howard Mortman.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne criticism of the rock industry is the way it portrays values in rock videos which are viewed by the kids,\u201d Sen. Paula Hawkins (R-Florida) said at the hearing. \u201cI brought along two videos, which I believe are representative of the kind of presentation which has caused the furor. The first is by the group Van Halen.\u201d<\/p>\n

She then played the head-banging music video on a TV in the center of the room, followed by \u201cWe\u2019re Not Gonna Take It\u201d by Twisted Sister.<\/p>\n

At the hearing, Tipper Gore \u2014 wife of then-senator and soon-to-be vice president Al Gore \u2014 also presented a slide show of sadomasochistic and supposedly Satan-inspired album-cover art, the L.A. Times reported<\/a>. Rockers Frank Zapp<\/a>a, John Denver and Dee Snider then spoke out against censorship.<\/p>\n

But senators said the meeting was not held to pass legislation, but rather to \u201ctalk about\u201d and \u201cventilate concerns\u201d brought about by conservative group the Parents Music Resource Center.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve come a long way from \u2018I can\u2019t get no satisfaction\u2019 to \u2018I\u2019m going to make you eat me at gunpoint,\u2019 \u201d the group\u2019s co-founder Susan Baker, also the wife of then-Treasury Secretary James Baker, told the hearing.<\/p>\n

The PMRC\u2019s campaign convinced the Recording Industry of America Association to put \u201cParental Advisory\u201d stickers on records deemed potentially inappropriate for kids, according to the Baltimore Sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Van Halen, known for his dazzling and innovative guitar solos, died Tuesday after a battle with throat cancer. He was 65.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
