Facebook banned a Canadian seed company\u2019s ad featuring a fairly plain picture of the root vegetable \u2014 labeling it \u201covertly sexual\u201d in an algorithm-fueled mess-up, according to reports.<\/p>\n

In the eye-watering flub, Facebook blocked the Gaze Seed Company\u2019s ad for $1.99 Walla Wallas, saying the onions were positioned in a \u201csexually suggestive manner\u201d \u2014 app<\/a>arently mistaking the bulbs for breasts, according to CBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess something about the two round shapes there could be misconstrued as boobs or something, nude in some way,\u201d Jackson McLean, a manager at the Newfoundland-based firm, told the outlet. \u201cYou\u2019d have to have a pretty active imagination to look at that and get something sexual out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

McLean posted a screen shot of the not-so-steamy vegetables on Facebook Saturday, writing, \u201cJust got notified by Facebook that the photo used for our Walla Walla Onion seed is \u201cOvertly Sexual\u201d\u2026 Can you see it?\u201d<\/p>\n

He later asked for the site to review the bizarre ban, and heard nothing back for days, he said.<\/p>\n

But after local media caught wind of the incident, Facebook admitted it had made a mistake, according to Canada\u2019s National Post.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe use automated technology<\/a> to keep nudity off our apps, but sometimes it doesn\u2019t know a walla walla onion from a, well, you know,\u201d said Meg Sinclair, a rep for\u00a0 Facebook Canada told the outlet Wednesday. \u201cWe restored the ad and are sorry for the business\u2019 trouble.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
