\n Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic challenger Kamala Harris spent an hour and a half verbally jousting over plexiglass during their debate Wednesday night in Utah, touching on the deadly coronavirus pandemic, the economy and a host of other issues.<\/p>\n

And while the lone vice presidential debate didn\u2019t have the fireworks of last week\u2019s showdown between President Trump and Joe Biden, it touched on more substance \u2014 when the candidates actually answered the questions.<\/p>\n

The Post\u2019s panel of election experts ultimately agreed on one thing \u2014 the clear winner was the house fly that landed on Pence\u2019s head and stayed for 2 minutes and 9 seconds.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth sides made their points well. Both sides went on the attack. Both ignored questions they didn\u2019t want to answer,\u201d said Matt Mackowiak, a longtime Republican strategist, podcast host and chairman of the local Republican Party in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure either side made up any real ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another analyst for The Post, longtime Republican Staten Island political strategist Leticia Remauro, gave Pence the edge.<\/p>\n

\u201cPence won this debate. He delivered his message in a measured, even tone which connected with viewers,\u201d said Remauro, a regular on NY1\u2019s \u201cInside City Hall\u201d who is planning a run for Staten Island borough president on the GOP line in 2021.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cHarris didn\u2019t connect as well with viewers because she came off angry and jumpy.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Eric Soufer, who worked on the Democratic presidential campaigns of John Edwards and Barack Obama, said Harris came out on top where it most counted \u2014 the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cCOVID and its devastating consequences are the only things that matter,\u201d said Soufer, who was also a top adviser to former state Attorney General<\/a> Eric Schneiderman and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe head of the coronavirus task force had to speak behind plexiglass because he works in the world\u2019s most infamous cluster,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cPence\u2019s greatest achievement was remaining cool under pressure of the fly.\u201d<\/p>\n
