In order for water to remain liquid under current conditions, these subsurface lakes would likely need to be<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"bt iu iv iw ix iy\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/is-life-hiding-under-the-surface-of-mars-dimitra-atri-nyu-abu-dhabi-astronomy-news-with-the-cosmic-companion-sept-8-2020\/\">extremely salty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8130\" class=\"gk gl em en b gm if gn go gp ig gq gr gs ih gt gu gv ii gw gx gy ij gz ha hc ee fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">If confirmed by other studies, these would be the first known liquid water lakes ever found on the surface of Mars, potentially making them abodes for Martian life.<\/p>\n<p id=\"29bc\" class=\"gk gl em en b gm if gn go gp ig gq gr gs ih gt gu gv ii gw gx gy ij gz ha hc ee fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">When evidence for the first lake was reported two years ago, the discovery was based on just 29 observations, taken between 2012 and 2015. This new study is compiled of the 134 observations carried out from 2012 to 2019.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2d93\" class=\"gk gl em en b gm if gn go gp ig gq gr gs ih gt gu gv ii gw gx gy ij gz ha hc ee fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cWhile it is not possible for water to remain stable on the surface today the new result opens the possibility that an entire system of ancient lakes might exist underground, perhaps millions or even billions of years old. On our own world, life thrives in the salty oceans of Earth, but few forms of life are able to withstand extreme salty conditions found in places like the Great Salt Lake.<\/p>\n<p id=\"85f9\" class=\"gk gl em en b gm if gn go gp ig gq gr gs ih gt gu gv ii gw gx gy ij gz ha hc ee fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Experiments show it takes a 50 percent solution of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"bt iu iv iw ix iy\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/a-salty-story-of-life-on-mars-2c6cfcf1ffef?source=friends_link&amp;sk=bd5f5748b0fcda926a8e8b2bd8d8a6f9\">salt<\/a><span>\u00a0sodium perchlorate<\/span> to keep water in its liquid form at -30 Celsius. In the even colder temperatures likely to be found in the smaller lakes, another salt \u2014 calcium perchlorate \u2014 would be needed to keep water from freezing at temperatures as low as -77 C (-106 F).<\/p>\n<p id=\"238c\" class=\"gk gl em en b gm if gn go gp ig gq gr gs ih gt gu gv ii gw gx gy ij gz ha hc ee fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cPerchlorates are ubiquitous in the Martian soil, and we thus hypothesized that a similar process may have occurred in our study region. They\u2019re just pickled. And that might be the case [on Mars],\u201d explains\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"bt iu iv iw ix iy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-02751-1#ref-CR1\">John Priscu<\/a>, an environmental scientist at Montana State University.<\/p>\n<p id=\"21d8\" class=\"gk gl em en b gm if gn go gp ig gq gr gs ih gt gu gv ii gw gx gy ij gz ha hc ee fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">However, some extremophiles have evolved to exist in briny environments of up to 30 percent salt content.
