A promise is a promise, and so the Liberals are pushing ahead with a <strong>plan to ban single-use plastics<\/strong> by next year. Yesterday, Wilkinson announced the first tranche of to-be-banned items\u2014namely, plastic checkout bags, straws, stir sticks, six-pack rings, cutlery, and \u201cfood ware made from hard-to-recycle plastics.\u201d Last year, when government-commissioned pollsters cast about for Big Issues on Canadians\u2019 minds, a plastics ban was a <strong>popular idea<\/strong>. Now, of course, disposable plastic in the form of PPE is vital to our collective survival.<\/p>\n<p>Tory MP <strong>Dan Albas<\/strong> was the designated opposer of today\u2019s news. He said a ban will <strong>put people out of work<\/strong> and <strong>raise costs<\/strong> for other businesses. \u201cPlastics are what is keeping family owned restaurants open and residents of long-term care homes safe,\u201d he said. \u201cReplacement products will be yet another cost for thousands of small businesses across Canada.\u201d Wilkinson says the banned items <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/single-use-plastics-1.5753327\">represent<\/a>\u00a0just \u201ca fraction of \u2026 one per cent of the products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the way into his party\u2019s weekly caucus meeting, Tory leader <strong>Erin O\u2019Toole<\/strong> said he\u2019d allow his MPs to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/glen_mcgregor\/status\/1313834338140721155\">vote their conscience<\/a> on both medical assistance in dying and a ban on forced conversion therapy. O\u2019Toole told the Commons that he personally supported an end to conversion therapy, but former leadership candidate\u00a0<strong>Derek Sloan<\/strong>\u00a0campaigned against the bill.\u00a0The leader was concise on his way out: \u201cWe had a good meeting today,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a great one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday was a busy day for <strong>Yves Giroux<\/strong> and the merry band of number-crunchers at the Parliamentary Budget Office. The PBO released costing estimates for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbo-dpb.gc.ca\/en\/blog\/legislative-costing-notes--notes-evaluation-cout-mesure-legislative\/LEG-2021-045-S--canada-recovery-benefit--prestation-canadienne-relance-economique\">four<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbo-dpb.gc.ca\/en\/blog\/legislative-costing-notes--notes-evaluation-cout-mesure-legislative\/LEG-2021-044-S--canada-recovery-sickness-benefit-crsb--prestation-canadienne-maladie-relance-economique-pcmre\">pandemic<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbo-dpb.gc.ca\/en\/blog\/legislative-costing-notes--notes-evaluation-cout-mesure-legislative\/LEG-2021-043-S--canada-emergency-response-benefit-cerb-four-week-extension--prestation-canadienne-urgence-pcu-prolongation-quatre-semaines\">recovery<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbo-dpb.gc.ca\/en\/blog\/legislative-costing-notes--notes-evaluation-cout-mesure-legislative\/LEG-2021-047-S--canada-recovery-caregiver-benefit-crcb--prestation-canadienne-relance-economique-proches-aidants-pcrepa\">benefits<\/a>, a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbo-dpb.gc.ca\/en\/blog\/news\/RP-2021-028-M--cost-estimate-federal-dental-care-program-uninsured-canadians--estimation-couts-lies-un-regime-soins-dentaires-federal-destines-tous-canadiens-non-assures\">federal dental care program<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbo-dpb.gc.ca\/en\/blog\/news\/RP-2021-030-M--tax-free-seniors-benefits--exemption-impot-prestations-aux-personnes-agees\">tax-free seniors benefits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A fed-prov proxy war:<\/strong>\u00a0Recall the Alberta government\u2019s pro-oil patch \u201cwar room,\u201d a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalobserver.com\/2020\/01\/02\/opinion\/albertas-30-million-bonfire\">$30-million-a-year<\/a>\u00a0\u201cindependent corporation\u201d known as the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianenergycentre.ca\/\"><strong>Canada Energy Centre<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that unabashedly champions Canadian industry. Well, the feds just launched a website for the conspicuously titled\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/energy-information.canada.ca\/en\"><strong>Canadian Centre for Energy Information<\/strong><\/a>, marketed as a \u201cconvenient one-stop virtual shop for independent and trusted information on energy in Canada.\u201d Both operations claim to be \u201cindependent.\u201d You be the judge.<\/p>\n<p>This month\u2019s\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0cover stories peer into two possible futures: one in which President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> loses his bid for re-election, and another that sees him win four more years in the White House.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What if Trump loses?<\/strong>\u00a0If the incumbent president does let go of the White House after losing the election, writes\u00a0<strong>Paul Wells<\/strong>, a new day in America isn\u2019t as easy as flicking a switch. All the current problems will remain, and a President-elect\u00a0<strong>Joe Biden<\/strong>\u2014a proud unifier of people\u2014likely won\u2019t have the solid backing of much of his Democratic Party. But if Biden wins, he at least gets to try to govern:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The <strong>American project<\/strong> is always provisional, never set. Conceived in liberty, that radiant and lurid nation has often been tested, <strong>often found wanting<\/strong>. The paths it finds through each new fiery trial are beyond any one woman or man\u2019s ability to wreck or redeem. But is the quest still worth it? Is the flag still there? Maybe. That\u2019s the hope that will guide Joe Biden, if he gets his chance.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What if Trump wins again?<\/strong>\u00a0If everyone\u2019s vote is allowed to count, writes\u00a0<strong>David Frum<\/strong>, the president is \u201cdoomed.\u201d His only path to victory is to \u201cstop the voting, stop the count, and then rely on the weird mechanics of the U.S. Electoral College to save him.\u201d But a Trump victory produces six what-if scenarios that take the world to a dark place:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens if Trump wins? <strong>The democratic idea loses<\/strong>. The world trade system loses. Collective security against authoritarian threats from Russia and China\u2014that loses, too. Anybody of a mind to chuckle, point or condescend\u2014after your first few moments of feeling superior\u2014you lose, too. The whole world thrives or falters according to whether the United States thrives or falters. If Trump wins, that experiment falters\u2014maybe not forever, because <strong>nothing is forever<\/strong>, but for a dangerously long time.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A call to end racism in health care:<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s time for a reckoning, writes <strong>Jane Philpott<\/strong> in\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>. The former health minister, who\u2019s now the dean of the Faculty of Health <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a>s at Queen\u2019s, argues for \u201ccomprehensive and collaborative cultural transformation\u201d in how this country <strong>trains health professionals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I wish I could say with certainty that the death of 37-year-old <strong>Joyce Echaquan<\/strong> will be a wake-up call for health systems in Canada. It should be. But history gives us no confidence to make such a claim. Joyce Echaquan is not the first person to die as a direct or indirect result of racism in Canadian health care systems. Tragically she won\u2019t be the last. But her death comes at a point in our history where Canadians may be more attuned to the dangers of systemic racism than we were, for example, when 45-year-old Brian Sinclair died in a Winnipeg hospital in 2008. We must seize this moment in history and act to <strong>prevent more senseless deaths<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Pandemic priorities:\u00a0<\/strong>As a second wave of COVID-19 starts to infiltrate long-term care homes in Ontario, Progressive Conservative MPP\u00a0<strong>Jeremy Roberts<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/richard680news\/status\/1313893827653009411\">tabled a bill<\/a> that would officially make <strong>daylight time permanent in Ontario<\/strong>. Should the bill pass\u2014and 680 News reports it has government support\u2014Ontarians would still change their clocks this November.
