Steam filters profanity and slurs by default in both Steam chat and game<\/a>s that support the filter. If you want to disable Steam\u2019s chat filter, you can. You can even add your own personal list of words you want to filter.<\/p>\n

This setting is available on your Steam account preferences page<\/a>. To access it, click your Steam account name at the top-right corner of the Steam window and select \u201cStore Preferences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scroll down to the \u201cCommunity Content Preferences\u201d section. The options under \u201cChat Filtering\u201d control Steam\u2019s chat filter.<\/p>\n

If you want to disable Steam\u2019s chat filter, select \u201cDo not filter strong profanity or slurs\u201d under \u201cLanguage Preferences.\u201d You can also select \u201cAllow strong profanity, but filter slurs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The default option is \u201cFilter strong profanity and slurs with \u201c\u2665\u2665\u2665\u201d or \u201c***\u201d.<\/p>\n

By default, the \u201cDo not filter text from my Steam Friends\u201d option is enabled. Steam won\u2019t filter offensive words your friends send in messages. You can uncheck this box if you\u2019d rather Steam app<\/a>lied this filtering to your friends\u2019 messages, too.<\/p>\n

Under \u201cAdditional Custom Filtered Words,\u201d you can fully customize the filter. To make Steam filter another word, type it into the \u201cAlways filter these words\u201d box and click \u201cAdd.\u201d To ensure Steam never filters a specific word, type it into the \u201cNever filter these words\u201d box and click \u201cadd.\u201d<\/p>\n

You can also download the lists as text files by clicking the \u201cDownload\u201d button\u2014or upload a list of words from a text file by clicking the \u201cUpload\u201d button.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re done, you can just leave the Preferences page. You don\u2019t have to click a \u201cSave\u201d button\u2014Steam will instantly apply your changes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
