\n The greatest road trip<\/a> of all time just went past Mars.<\/p>\n

Elon Musk\u2019s cherry-red Tesla Roadster \u2014 which the CEO blasted into space back in 2018 aboard SpaceX\u2019s Falcon Heavy rocket \u2014 is currently doing a flyby near the red planet, according to SpaceX.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarman, last seen leaving Earth, made its first close app<\/a>roach with Mars today,\u201d the official SpaceX account tweeted<\/a>, referring to the mannequin seated in the car\u2019s drivers seat, who is wearing a prototype of SpaceX\u2019s sleek spacesuit.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t expect a pitstop, however. Though the flyby is considered close by galactic standards, it is still 5 million miles away.<\/p>\n

It won\u2019t be the Roadster\u2019s only close pass by Mars. The car is expected to be in orbit around the sun in a a slightly off-center path that alternately intersects the orbits of Earth and Mars \u2014 for tens of millions of years.<\/p>\n

Since its launch in February 2018, the Roadster has traveled 1.3 billion miles through space, far exceeding its 36,000 mile warranty, according to whereisroadster.com<\/a>, which has been tracking the vehicle.<\/p>\n

It is currently heading in Earth\u2019s direction at 17,314 miles per hour. Back on land, the Roadster tops out at 250 miles per hour.<\/p>\n

Musk\u2019s ride is the first car to leave Earth, and has the phrase \u201cDon\u2019t Panic!\u201d displayed on its dashboard \u2014 a reference to Musk\u2019s favorite book, \u201cThe Hitchiker\u2019s Guide to the Galaxy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Digital copies of Isaac Asimov\u2019s classic sci-fi series<\/a> \u201cFoundation\u201d are also on board.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
