The Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em> sequel, AKA\u00a0Spider-Man 3<\/em><\/strong>, is about to get a little Strange.\u00a0A new report reveals that Benedict Cumberbatch<\/strong>\u2018s Doctor Strange is now a part of the film, suggesting that Strange is stepping into the mentor role for Tom Holland<\/strong>\u2018s Peter Parker previously occupied by\u00a0Robert Downey Jr.\u2019s Tony Stark in Spider-Man: Homecoming<\/em>\u00a0and Samuel L. Jackson\u2019s Nick Fury in\u00a0Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em>.<\/p>\n

THR<\/a> has the scoop on Benedict Cumberbatch joining the\u00a0Spider-Man 3<\/em> cast. This suggests a few things, specifically giving further credence to the theory that the Multiverse will play a major role in the film. The Multiverse was teased in\u00a0Far From Home<\/em>, but was ultimately revealed to be a rouse created by Jake Gyllenhaal\u2019s Mysterio. However, the upcoming\u00a0Doctor Strange<\/em> sequel is called\u00a0Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness<\/em>, implying that the\u00a0real<\/em> Multiverse is going to come into play. This could also explain the return of Jamie Foxx<\/strong>\u2018s Electro \u2013 who menaced a completely different version of Spidey \u2013 in\u00a0Spider-Man 3<\/em>.
\nThe THR report adds that Strange will be stepping into the mentor role for Spidey. Tony Stark served as Peter Parker\u2019s mentor in\u00a0Spider-Man: Homecoming<\/em>, and Nick Fury (or rather, a Skrull disguised as Nick Fury) took over that job in\u00a0Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em>, which was set after Stark died at the end of\u00a0Avengers: Endgame<\/a><\/em>. I\u2019m not sure if this is a fact, or something that THR is speculating. If Strange\u00a0is<\/em> going to serve as a mentor, I can\u2019t help but ask: when the hell is the MCU Spider-Man going to be able to strike out on his own? Why does he constantly need a mentor?<\/p>\n

Spider-Man 3<\/em> (or whatever it\u2019s going to be called) and\u00a0Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness<\/em> are both supposed to start shooting this month:\u00a0Spider-Man 3<\/em> in Atlanta and\u00a0Doctor Strange<\/em> in London. I\u2019m not sure how Cumberbatch is going to get between two sets, but I\u2019ll let the folks at Marvel figure that out. That\u2019s what they get paid for.<\/p>\n

In addition to Tom Holland,\u00a0Spider-Man<\/em> franchise players\u00a0Zendaya<\/strong>, Marisa Tomei<\/strong>, Tony Revolori<\/strong>, and Jacob Batalon<\/strong> are all expected to return. Writer-director Jon Watts<\/strong> is back as well. As of now,\u00a0Spider-Man 3<\/em> is set to open on\u00a0December 17, 2021<\/strong>, while\u00a0Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness<\/em> is scheduled for\u00a0March 25, 2022<\/strong>. But of course, as the last few months have taught us, movie release dates are not set in stone right now and can change without a moment\u2019s notice.<\/p>\n
