{"id":85281,"date":"2020-10-09T07:17:34","date_gmt":"2020-10-09T04:17:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/community-reacts-to-new-doj-crypto-enforcement-guidelines\/"},"modified":"2020-10-09T07:17:34","modified_gmt":"2020-10-09T04:17:34","slug":"community-reacts-to-new-doj-crypto-enforcement-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/community-reacts-to-new-doj-crypto-enforcement-guidelines\/","title":{"rendered":"# Community reacts to new DoJ crypto enforcement guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong># Community reacts to new DoJ crypto enforcement guidelines  <\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.cointelegraph.com\/images\/840_aHR0cHM6Ly9zMy5ldS1jZW50cmFsLTEuYW1hem9uYXdzLmNvbS9zMy5jb2ludGVsZWdyYXBoLmNvbS91cGxvYWRzLzIwMjAtMTAvOGY1YTFmMmQtMzlhMi00YzFmLWFkNmQtM2Q5ZWYxYmI0OWE4LmpwZw==.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div data-v-17f60ba6=\"\">The new cryptocurrency enforcement <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ag\/page\/file\/1326061\/download\">guidelines<\/a> by the Department of Justice (DoJ) have received a negative response from segments of the crypto community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Published earlier today by the attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> for the U.S. William Barr, the DOJ report aims to address the \u201cuniquely dangerous threats to public safety\u201d cryptocurrency poses. <\/p>\n<p>Citing the words \u201ccrime\u201d or \u201ccriminal\u201d 168 times in the 83-page document, many in the community have interpreted the DoJ\u2019s position as a direct attack on crypto that labels the entire sector as an avenue for crime. <\/p>\n<p>Coinshares\u2019 CSO Meltem Demirors <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Melt_Dem\/status\/1314293641972719616?s=20\">described<\/a> the policy document as \u201ca commercial reel of every financial crime known in crypto,\u201d asserting that the DoJ\u2019s over-emphasis on providing examples of criminal use-cases for crypto fails to address the myriad of legitimate utilities for crypto assets.<\/p>\n<p>This sentiment was echoed by many on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>, with fairly typical response coming from \u2018<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CryptoPennyCO\/status\/1314248443678793728?s=20\">CryptoPennyCO25<\/a>\u2019 who believes the DoJ report is simply trying to paint crypto in a bad light:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Justice Department with more negative spin on how cryptocurrency is a tool of terrorists, rogue regimes, criminals, etc. and the importance of enforcing the laws against such activity. \u200d\u2642\ufe0f <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fSrgs4lo5b\">https:\/\/t.co\/fSrgs4lo5b<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CryptoPennyCO \u200d\u2642\ufe0f 2025 (@CryptoPennyCO) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CryptoPennyCO\/status\/1314248443678793728?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 8, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some in the Ripple (XRP) community took umbrage at a line in the report that states: \u201cRipple Labs willfully violated several requirements of the [Bank Secrecy Act] BSA.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bgarlinghouse\/status\/1314279492618256387?s=20\">suggested<\/a> the report, and the overall U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach, fell a long way short from providing clear guidance:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAn 70+ page contradictory report is not regulatory clarity \u2014 many responsible private players are trying to follow the rules, but that becomes increasingly hard when there\u2019s no single arbiter of the law.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Agreement echoed throughout the XRP Army with Twitter user Massimo <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaxPrimeXRP\/status\/1314280112255389696?s=20\">saying<\/a> that the report is another spin on the, \u201cnon-sensical merry go round that doesn\u2019t address what we really need here for the space to mature and progress in an organic, safe and meaningful way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen said the firm is considering moving to the U.K., Switzerland, Singapore, or Japan due to the government\u2019s lack of regulatory clarity. <\/p>\n<p>This new framework by the DoJ might fast-track Ripple\u2019s decision \u2014 and Garlinghouse suggested other companies may follow suit. He <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bgarlinghouse\/status\/1314279493742276609?s=20\">added<\/a> that unless clearer guidelines are provided, \u201ccompanies will move their investment (or whole company) overseas.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>However not everyone in the crypto community was against the new framework. General counsel for Compound Jake Chervinsky <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jchervinsky\/status\/1314261235945308166?s=20\">identified<\/a> it as a positive development:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cGuidance like this doesn&#8217;t come often &amp; is very helpful for understanding the government&#8217;s regulatory &amp; law enforcement priorities.
