“#Noble Peace Prize goes to The World Food Programme<\/strong>”

\n The United Nations\u2019 World Food Programme won the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for its efforts to combat hunger and food insecurity around the world.<\/p>\n

The prize, which was announced by Nobel Committee chair Berit Reiss-Andersen, is worth 10 million Swedish crowns \u2014 about $1.1 million \u2014 and will be presented in Oslo on Dec. 10.<\/p>\n

The WFP, which was created in 1961, provides food to over 90 million people a year, according to CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was honored \u201cfor its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s prize was won by Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian prime minister who helped end a war between his country and Eritrea.<\/p>\n

Four US Presidents have won the Nobel Peace Prize \u2014 Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama.<\/p>\n

President Trump scored three nominations for the prize, including for his foreign policy philosophy, dubbed the \u201cTrump Doctrine\u201d and helping broker a peace deal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.<\/p>\n

Other winners have included Nelson Mandela, Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and Polish dissident Lech Walesa.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
