Linux distributions package up the Linux kernel and other software into a complete operating system you can use. Different Linux distributions have different system tools, desktop environments, included applications, and visual <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a>s.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ubuntu.com\/download\/desktop\">Ubuntu<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/linuxmint.com\/\">Linux Mint<\/a> are still some of the most popular Linux distributions. We really like Manjaro, too. There are many, many other options\u2014there\u2019s no wrong answer, although some Linux distributions are intended for more technical, experienced users.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve picked your Linux distribution of choice, visit its website and download its installer. You\u2019ll get an ISO file, which is a disc image file containing the Linux distribution\u2019s installation files.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, you\u2019ll be asked to choose between 32-bit and 64-bit distributions. Most modern computers have 64-bit-capable CPUs. If your computer was made in the last decade, you should choose the 64-bit system. Linux distributions are dropping support for 32-bit systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>The Best Linux Distributions for Beginners<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Create_Bootable_Installation_Media\"><\/span>Create Bootable Installation Media<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To boot, try, and install the Linux system you downloaded, you\u2019ll need to create bootable installation <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> from your ISO file.<\/p>\n<p>There are several ways you can do this. If you have a writeable DVD you want to use, you can burn the ISO file to disc using the \u201cBurn disc image\u201d function in Windows. However, you\u2019ll probably want to use a USB drive instead\u2014USB drives are faster than DVDs and will work on any computer with a DVD drive.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll need to create a bootable Linux USB drive on Windows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ISO file for your Linux distribution of choice.<\/li>\n<li>The free <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rufus.ie\/\">Rufus<\/a> software. Ubuntu\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ubuntu.com\/tutorials\/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows#2-requirements\">official instructions<\/a> recommend Rufus, too.<\/li>\n<li>A USB drive of at least 4 GB in size. Some Linux distributions may need larger drives if they have larger installers, but 4 GB should be fine for most Linux distributions, including Ubuntu. (<strong>Warning<\/strong>: The contents of the USB drive you use will be erased.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Launch Rufus and insert your USB flash drive into your computer to get started. First, in the \u201cDevice\u201d box, select your USB drive. Second, click the \u201cSelect\u201d button and browse to the ISO file you downloaded. Third, click the \u201cStart\u201d button to create the USB drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-693625 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/rufus-burn.png.pagespeed.ce.YOzmK3819Z.png\" alt=\"Creating a Ubuntu USB drive with Rufus\" width=\"650\" height=\"579\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You may see a few warnings. Accept the default options: Click \u201cYes\u201d if you\u2019re prompted to download additional files, and click \u201cOK\u201d if you\u2019re prompted to write in ISO mode. Finally, you will be warned the Rufus will erase all files on your USB drive\u2014ensure you\u2019ve backed up any important files and click \u201cOK\u201d to continue.<\/p>\n<p>Rufus will create your USB installer drive, and you\u2019ll see the progress bar at the bottom of the window fill up. When it\u2019s a full green bar reading \u201cReady,\u201d you can click \u201cClose\u201d to finish the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Create a Bootable Linux USB Flash Drive, the Easy Way<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Boot_Your_Linux_Installation_Media\"><\/span>Boot Your Linux Installation Media<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re booting the Linux system on the same computer you created installation media on, you don\u2019t even need to unplug your USB drive. You\u2019ll just have to reboot your PC and boot it from the Linux installation media.<\/p>\n<p>To do so, select the \u201cRestart\u201d option in Windows. Your PC may automatically boot from the inserted USB drive and into Linux.<\/p>\n<p>If your computer just boots back into Windows, you may have to press a certain key to access a boot device menu and select it during the installation process. Common keys you may have to press during the boot process include F12, Escape, F2, and F10. You may see this key displayed on screen during the boot process.<\/p>\n<p>You may also have to access your BIOS or UEFI firmware settings screen and change the boot order. The exact process will depend on your model of PC. Check your PC\u2019s instructions for more information. They\u2019re designed not to boot unapproved operating systems, which should help protect you from rootkits and other malware.<\/p>\n<p>Some Linux distributions, like Ubuntu, are designed to work with Secure Boot and use a special Microsoft-signed bootloader, letting them run on your system. Other Linux distributions may require you disable Secure Boot before they can boot.<\/p>\n<p>However, in many situations, your Linux distribution should just boot normally. If Linux boots, don\u2019t worry about Secure Boot. If you see a Secure Boot error message and Linux doesn\u2019t boot, check your Linux distribution\u2019s documentation for more information\u2014and consider disabling Secure Boot on your PC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Boot and Install Linux on a UEFI PC With Secure Boot<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Try_Linux\"><\/span>Try Linux<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With Linux booted, you\u2019ll get a \u201clive\u201d Linux desktop you can use just as if Linux was installed on your PC. It isn\u2019t actually installed yet and hasn\u2019t modified your PC in any way. It\u2019s running entirely off the USB drive you created (or the disc you burned.)<\/p>\n<p>For example, on Ubuntu, click \u201cTry Ubuntu\u201d instead of \u201cInstall Ubuntu\u201d to try it out.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-693626 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/xtry-ubuntu.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.lDEB3O40Gj.png\" alt=\"Click &quot;Try Ubuntu&quot; on the Install screen\" width=\"650\" height=\"481\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You can explore the Linux system and use it. Bear in mind that it will likely perform more quickly once it\u2019s installed to your PC\u2019s internal storage. You should always have recent backups, especially when you\u2019re messing with your system like this.<\/p>\n<p>It should be possible to install Linux in a dual-boot scenario and have the Linux installer seamlessly resize your Windows partition without affecting your files. However, mistakes can happen when resizing partitions. And it would be possible to accidentally click the wrong option and wipe your Windows partition.<\/p>\n<p>So, before continuing, we encourage you to back up all your important data\u2014just in case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>What&#8217;s the Best Way to Back Up My Computer?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Install_Linux\"><\/span>Install Linux<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re happy with your Linux distribution and it works well on your PC, you can choose to install it. The Linux distribution will be installed on an internal system drive, just like Windows.<\/p>\n<p>There are two ways to do this: You could install Linux in a \u201cdual-boot\u201d configuration, where it sits alongside your Windows operating system on your hard drive and lets you choose which operating system you want to run each time. Or, you can install Linux over Windows, removing the Windows operating system and replacing it with Linux. If you have two hard drives, you can even install Linux on one of the hard drives and use them in a dual-boot scenario.<\/p>\n<p>We recommend installing Linux in a dual-boot configuration to give yourself the option of which to use. If you know you really don\u2019t want to use Windows and you want to reclaim some hard disk space, however, go ahead and remove Windows. Just bear in mind that you\u2019ll lose all your installed applications and any files you haven\u2019t backed up.<\/p>\n<p>To perform the installation process, run the installer from the live Linux system. Go through the installer and choose the options you want to use. Read the options carefully to ensure you\u2019re installing Linux in the way you want to. Reboot and remove the USB drive or DVD you installed Linux from.
