\n The Broadway League will reportedly announce Friday yet another extension of the stage shutdown in New York City.<\/p>\n

It is expected that the organization will suspend performances through May 30, 2021, marking another COVID-19-induced delay before live theater productions will return, NBC New York reported<\/a>. Details about refunds for tickets sold during the newly announced shutdown period are also expected.<\/p>\n

Returning productions are tentatively projected to resume performances over a series<\/a> of rolling dates beginning June 2021, according to BroadwayWorld.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Broadway performances were suspended on March 12, 2020. At that time, 31 productions were running, including eight new shows in previews. Rehearsals for eight other productions \u2014 set to open in the spring \u2014 were also shutdown.<\/p>\n

On April 8, a reporter in Albany asked Gov. Andrew Cuomo about Broadway\u2019s initial cancellation of performances with a hoped for reopening date June 7, 2020. The governer responded at the time: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t use what Broadway thinks as a barometer of anything unless they\u2019re in the public health business and have seen better numbers and models.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah Jessica Parker, who was set to app<\/a>ear in a spring revival of \u201cPlaza Suite\u201d opposite husband Matthew Broderick, wrote in an op-ed for Variety this week that she hopes people who fled New York during the pandemic return and open their wallets<\/a> for theater tickets.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m encouraging people to come back to New York and reinvest in our community,\u201d the 55-year-old actress wrote<\/a>. \u201cWhether it\u2019s a theater or a small business, you can\u2019t reopen a business until you have the patrons there \u2014 it\u2019s a psychological thing. And I believe it\u2019s incumbent upon people who\u2019ve had success in this city to reinvest, to come home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parker also shouted out all the people directly and indirectly employed by the industry, which grossed $1.8 billion last season<\/a> and attracted a record 15 million people.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheater is the way we induce visitors to come to our city and plan those special afternoons and evenings, which keep such a vast web of my fellow citizens employed and afloat,\u201d she continued. \u201cAll the people I know and all the people I don\u2019t know who are out of work need theater for the rent, and the mortgage, and children\u2019s educations \u2014 all the countless \u2018ands\u2019 that are creating so much anxiety across the city and the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although the shutdown still holds firm, the long-delayed 2020 Tony Award nominations for excellence\u00a0in theater are set to be announced at noon on Thursday, October 15, via their\u00a0official Youtube channel.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are thrilled to have the opportunity to recognize Broadway\u2019s magnificent work during the 2019-2020 season,\u201d American Theatre Wing President Heather Hitchens and Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin said in a joint statement. \u201cOur Broadway community has been incredibly resilient during this difficult time, and we look forward to paying tribute to the performers and artists.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
