“#\u2018Indiana Jones 5\u2019 Screenplay No Longer in David Koepp\u2019s Hands<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Indiana Jones 5<\/em><\/strong> is still years away, and hasn\u2019t even begun production yet \u2013 but it\u2019s already gone through several major changes. The biggest change of all: Steven Spielberg<\/strong>, who directed all the other\u00a0Indiana Jones\u00a0<\/em>films, is sitting this one out and handing the reins over to James Mangold<\/strong>. And that change has set off a series<\/a> of other changes as well.<\/p>\n

David Koepp<\/strong>, a writer who has worked with Spielberg several times before, was originally handling the script<\/a>. Koepp handed his duties off to other writers, but then returned to work on the screenplay some more. But now, according to Koepp himself, he\u2019s no longer involved with the project \u2013 and Mangold might be starting completely from scratch.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s recap: when\u00a0Indiana Jones 5<\/em> was first announced, David Koepp was on board to handle the script. Then, word surfaced that\u00a0Jonathan Kasdan<\/strong>\u00a0(Solo: A Star Wars Story<\/em>) and\u00a0Dan Fogelman<\/strong>\u00a0(This Is Us<\/em>,\u00a0Tangled<\/em>) would both be working on the script. And\u00a0then<\/em> script duties fell back into Koepp\u2019s lap, with the writer stating in September of last year: \u201cI\u2019m working on it again. We\u2019re still trying. And I think we\u2019ve got a good idea this time. We\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n

By February of this year, however, star Harrison Ford<\/strong> revealed the film was still dealing with script issues. Finally, Spielberg seemed to realize that enough was enough, and handed the movie over to\u00a0Ford v Ferrari<\/em> director James Mangold. So where does the project stand now? Is Koepp still involved? According to the writer himself, no.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Collider, Koepp confirmed he was no longer involved with the project, adding:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen James Mangold came in \u2026 he deserves a chance to take his shot at it. I\u2019d done several versions with Steven. And when Steven left, it seemed like the right time to let Jim have his own take on it and have his own person or himself write it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In other words: there\u2019s still plenty of work to be done, but Koepp won\u2019t be doing it. Last month, Mangold revealed he was hoping to try \u201csomething new\u201d with the franchise, stating:<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the most important thing is, in an age when franchises have become a commodity, that serving the same thing again. At least for me, in the dances I\u2019ve had with any franchises, serving the same thing again, the same way, usually just produces a longing for the first time you ate it. Meaning, it makes an audience wish that they just had the first one over again. So you have to push something to someplace new, while also remembering the core reasons why everyone was gathered. And to use\u00a0Logan<\/em>\u00a0as an example of that, when you\u2019re dealing in a world of a very pressured franchise.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I remain conflicted about this entire endeavor. I\u2019m fine with Mangold bringing in new writers, or writing things himself \u2013 I like a lot of Koepp\u2019s work, but his\u00a0Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the\u00a0<\/em>Crystal Skull<\/em> script left a lot to be desired. And I like Mangold as a director \u2013 I\u2019ve enjoyed almost all of his films. But it still feels\u00a0weird<\/em> to have an\u00a0Indiana Jones<\/em> movie in the hands of a director other than Steven Spielberg. I guess I\u2019ll just have to get used to it.<\/p>\n

For now,\u00a0Indiana Jones 5<\/em> is set to open\u00a0July\u00a029,\u00a02022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
