\n Conservative: The West\u2019s Systematic Woke-ism <\/strong><\/p>\n

At Spectator USA, Freddy Gray argues that Black Lives Matter and the rest are exactly wrong: \u201cWestern society isn\u2019t systemically racist. If anything, it is systemically woke.\u201d Indeed, \u201cour political institutions, our schools and colleges, our corporations are all geared toward destroying systemic racism.\u201d Bizarrely, activists think \u201cthe media<\/a> is part of the evil, neoliberal system that privileges whites and keeps minorities down,\u201d even targeting CNN headquarters when the network \u201chas done its best to portray rioting as benign, arson as peaceful and looting as just.\u201d Sadly, journalists in response \u201cstrive ever harder to show fealty to the cause, even if that means jettisoning their responsibility to tell the truth.\u201d None of this \u201csuggests institutional, structural or systemic racism. It suggests the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: The Wages of Fake History<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the name of \u201canti-racism,\u201d rioters are now \u201ctearing down and defacing memorials wantonly,\u201d laments The Federalist\u2019s Joy Pullmann \u2014 including \u201cthose to abolitionists.\u201d These protesters assume that anyone being celebrated is \u201cprobably a racist\u201d \u2014 a \u201cprejudiced ignorance\u201d that extends to Abraham Lincoln, \u201cthe second all-black volunteer regiment of the Union Army\u201d and abolitionists, among others. Such bias is growing among voting-age adults \u2014 because America\u2019s schools \u201cactively teach them to hate their country,\u201d catechizing them in \u201cfalse information\u201d that will likely \u201cincrease racial tensions.\u201d That\u2019s why we need \u201ca new, non-racist boycott, divest, sanction movement \u2014 for taxpayer-funded education.\u201d Asks Pullmann: \u201cHow many more statues and American minds have to get smashed\u201d before we refuse \u201cthese intellectual enemies of our country\u201d any more \u201cpublic funds\u201d?<\/p>\n

From the left: Against \u2018Box-Checked\u2019 Veeps<\/strong><\/p>\n

While presidential nominees often look for running mate \u201ccandidates who check multiple boxes,\u201d that app<\/a>roach can be \u201cperilous,\u201d warns New York\u2019s Ed Kilgore. If campaigns focus on \u201citemized strength,\u201d after all, they can miss that \u201cpoliticians are real live people with flaws.\u201d Take John McCain\u2019s 2008 choice of running mate Sarah Palin, who had \u201cthree potentially strong qualities\u201d but ended up being a \u201cgoofy low-information extremist.\u201d Campaigns can go to the other extreme and pick \u201cpolitical ciphers\u201d such as Hillary Clinton\u2019s 2016 choice of Tim Kaine, an approach that backfired on her. The best strategy is to choosing someone with \u201cthe overall character and skill set\u201d to be \u201ca heartbeat away from the presidency\u201d without \u201cbecoming an embarrassment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: Gorsuch\u2019s Anti-Trump Torpedo<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the 2016 GOP primaries, Donald Trump appealed mostly to less-religious Republicans, The Week\u2019s Damon Linker notes, and it was \u201conly after Trump had locked down the nomination and pledged to appoint judges to the federal courts who had been verified as reliably conservative\u201d that conservative Catholics and evangelicals rallied to his cause. His nomination of the supposedly rock-solid Neil Gorsuch was key to Trump\u2019s consolidation of this bloc. But now Gorsuch has authored the majority decision in two cases holding that the 1964 Civil Rights Act extends to sexual orientation and gender identity, a development that will have \u201cexplosive implications\u201d \u2014 damaging the \u201cbut Gorusch!\u201d ballot-box \u201crationale\u201d for religious voters who otherwise find Trump\u2019s personal failings reprehensible. \u201cWhy should social conservatives show up to vote for a president and a party that repeatedly raises their hopes and then dashes them?\u201d<\/p>\n

Historian: Class, Not Race, Divides Us<\/strong><\/p>\n

The left\u2019s mantra of \u201cwhite privilege\u201d, avers Victor Davis Hanson at American Greatness, suggests that \u201cclass matters not at all.\u201d In fact, \u201cthe clingers, the deplorables, the irredeemables and Joe Biden\u2019s \u2018dregs\u2019 have very little in common with those who so libel them but superficially share supposedly omnipotent and similar skin color.\u201d The mostly white wokester class ignores this, with the perverse result that \u201cthe nation\u2019s privileged whites on campuses such as Harvard, Yale and Stanford, in the top echelon of politics and the corporate and entertainment worlds, all deplore in the abstract something they call \u2018white privilege\u2019 in others who have never really experienced it.\u201d The real dividing line, rather, is \u201cclass\u201d \u2014 \u201cthe truth that the upscale white progressive dares not utter.\u201d<\/p>\n
