\n \u201cSong Exploder,\u201d in which artists deconstruct their tunes, comes to visual life in the new Netflix docuseries<\/a> of the same name.<\/p>\n

Hrishikesh Hirway, a musician who leads the One AM Radio project, created the popular music podcast in 2013 and now hosts the show \u2014 which features Alicia Keys, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ty Dolla $ign and a reunited (if separately) R.E.M. breaking down one tune per episode.<\/p>\n

Hirway, 41, spoke to The Post about making the transition from his podcast to Netflix, how he got R.E.M. to reveal the secrets behind \u201cLosing My Religion\u201d and what song he wishes he had written.<\/p>\n

Were you worried about how the podcast would translate as a docuseries?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, for sure. The podcast is not just a show that happ<\/a>ens to exist in audio \u2014 it\u2019s about audio. And so trying to figure out how that would translate into something visual was a real puzzle. The podcast was something that I started in my bedroom and continue to make in my garage. A part of the reason why the podcast existed is because it was something that I could literally do myself. With the television show, the number of people that are involved is hard to keep track of.<\/p>\n

What is it like seeing yourself on TV now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s brutal. [Laughs.] This is my first time on camera for anything.<\/p>\n

Why did you decide to do \u201c3 Hour Drive\u201d instead of one of Alicia Keys\u2019 big hits?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I spoke to Alicia for the first time, she said, \u201cI have these new songs, and I would love to tell the story of one of them.\u201d When she told me the story of \u201c3 Hour Drive,\u201d I said, \u201cThat\u2019s gotta be it. That\u2019s so beautiful and so meaningful and deep.\u201d<\/p>\n

How did you get R.E.M., who aren\u2019t even together as a band, to discuss \u201cLosing My Religion\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That was sort of an alley-oop from a past experience with them. When the 25th-anniversary [reissue] of \u201cAutomatic for the People\u201d came out, their publicist suggested that they do \u201cSong Exploder,\u201d and we did an episode on the song \u201cTry Not to Breathe.\u201d And I heard later that it was their favorite interview they did for that whole project. So with that in mind, I went back and I said, \u201cWill you give me another shot in this totally different medium? And wouldn\u2019t it be cool if we could do \u2018Losing My Religion?’\u201d And they said yes.<\/p>\n

What song do you wish you had written?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first thing that popped into my head is Jeff Buckley\u2019s cover of \u201cHallelujah\u201d by Leonard Cohen. That song cuts through me. But it\u2019s the Jeff Buckley cover of it that really kills me, and that wouldn\u2019t have existed if Leonard Cohen hadn\u2019t written \u201cHallelujah.\u201d So it\u2019s the combination of the songwriting and the performance. It\u2019s not just the songwriting that gets talked about in the show \u2014 it\u2019s also about the expression of that.<\/p>\n

What other docuseries do you like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a show on Netflix called \u201cAbstract\u201d that was a really important touchstone for \u201cSong Exploder.\u201d I love design, and here was this show that was all about design. And watching the first episode, I was like, \u201cOh, somebody did a visual version of \u2018Song Exploder!’\u201d That was sort of my lightbulb going off.<\/p>\n

What was the last thing you watched on Netflix?<\/strong><\/p>\n

An episode of \u201cThe Great British Baking Show.\u201d To me, \u201cSong Exploder\u201d and \u201cThe Greatest British Baking Show\u201d are really kindred spirits. They\u2019re like siblings to me because, in both cases, they\u2019re about somebody trying to solve a creative problem.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
