“#Elizabeth Marvel makes debut in Marvel universe on Hulu’s ‘Helstrom’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Prolific character actor Elizabeth Marvel makes her debut in the Marvel universe in Hulu\u2019s \u201cHelstrom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally getting to be in the Marvel universe was awesome,\u201d Marvel, 50 (no relation to the company) tells The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a 14-year-old son who basically started reading comic books when he learned to read,\u201d she says. \u201cSo that was a huge bonus, because of course he was extremely excited \u2014 and now his friends think I\u2019m cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Premiering Oct. 16, the series<\/a> follows sibling duo Daimon and Ana Helstrom (played by Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon), the children of a mysterious serial killer who hunt down the worst of humanity. Marvel plays their mom, Victoria Helstrom, who is institutionalized and possessed by a demon.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt challenged me creatively, because basically I got to play all of the keys on the piano \u2014 the black keys and the white keys,\u201d she says. \u201cOn the one hand, I\u2019m this very nurturing mother who suffered extreme trauma. And on the other, I\u2019m this all-powerful demon. So I got to go all over the place with this role. I love the direction that a lot of horror is moving in, because it asks actors to reach these extremely heightened states and deal with these impossible situations yet remain totally honest.
\u201cThat\u2019s actor candy \u2014 and really hard to pull off.\u201d<\/p>\n

To aid her portrayal, Marvel took a deep dive into other actors\u2019 performances involving demonic possession or behavior.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a huge fan of the horror genre, and the idea of being a part of Marvel\u2019s foray into horror was very exciting to me,\u201d she says. \u201cI did a lot of research\u2026 I watched Isabelle Adjani in [1981 movie] \u2018Possession,\u2019 I watched Anthony Hopkins in \u2018The Silence of the Lambs,\u2019 I watched [2016 South Korean film] \u2018The Wailing.\u2019 Also, my character is sort of a compilation of all of the roles in \u2018The Exorcist.\u2019 I left little easter eggs in each episode to the different horror films I\u2019m doing a little homage to. So I\u2019ll see if fans pick up on that or not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marvel, who lives in Brooklyn and is married to \u201cThe Night Of\u201d star Bill Camp, has app<\/a>eared in a slew of popular shows and movies, including \u201cHouse of Cards,\u201d \u201cHomeland,\u201d \u201cFargo\u201d and films such as \u201cBurn After Reading\u201d \u201cTrue Grit,\u201d and \u201cLincoln.\u201d In 2019 she also starred in a\u00a0 Broadway production of \u201cKing Lear\u201d opposite Glenda Jackson and Pedro Pascal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just go where they ask me to go. I don\u2019t have a grand plan but I\u2019m very fortunate because I\u2019ve always been kind of an odd duck and a character actor,\u201d she says. \u201cSo the work that I get asked to do is often extremely interesting. I love doing a play and then spending some time on a TV set and hopping into a movie. I\u2019m grateful that I get to move between all three pretty consistently. I enjoy each medium for different reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Up next, she\u2019ll be in big-screen Western \u201cNews<\/a> of the World\u201d opposite Tom Hanks, currently slated for a Dec. 25 release.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was everything people say,\u201d she says about Hanks. \u201cHe\u2019s so lovely and hardworking. He absolutely treats everybody the same \u2014 the wardrobe people, the craft service people, the actors. That shouldn\u2019t be exceptional, but it is, and it\u2019s awesome with someone of his stature.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd he has the best stories when you\u2019re waiting for the lights to be set up.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
