\n Trevor Bauer is calling the commissioner\u2019s bluff.<\/p>\n

Shortly after Rob Manfred reneged on his recent \u201c100 percent\u201d guarantee that there will be baseball in 2020 and said he was \u201cnot confident\u201d game<\/a>s would be played this year, the outspoken Reds pitcher took to Twitter<\/a> to declare that the commissioner is delaying negotiations on behalf of owners, as to better justify a shorter schedule and lower \u2014 albeit fully prorated \u2014 player salaries.<\/p>\n

With the most recent round of the contentious talks threatening to set the sport back years, the players\u2019 union rejected the proposal for a 72-game schedule at 80 percent of their pay (as much as 83 percent if a postseason were concluded) and did not make a counteroffer, asking MLB to set a schedule.<\/p>\n

The March agreement between the players and owners authorizes Manfred to set a season of any length, as long as the players receiving full prorated pay.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlayers told you to set the season, but it\u2019s too early to set the season right now, isn\u2019t it Rob? Because then you\u2019d have to explain why you\u2019re only going to impose 50 games when we could easily play 70 right now,\u201d Bauer tweeted. \u201cThe tactic is to bluff with \u201cno season\u201d again and delay another 2-3 weeks until you clear the risk of \u201cnot negotiating in good faith by trying to play as many games as possible\u201d. The public backlash combined with potential of having to explain yourself in front of an arbitrator isn\u2019t too app<\/a>ealing, is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Bauer then estimated a more ideal MLB timeline for the shortened season, reasoning that Manfred doesn\u2019t have to set a schedule until June 28.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut today Is June 15, so how do you delay another 13 days?<\/p>\n

\u201cGuess we all got that answer today. Threaten to cancel the season. Threaten arbitration. Threaten grievances. All the while, hold the fans for ransom. Hold the future of the game for ransom. No one believes your bluff, bud. You\u2019re holding a losing hand. Unfortunately, it\u2019s a losing hand for everyone involved, not just you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tony Clark, the player association\u2019s executive director, issued a statement Monday in response to Manfred\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlayers are disgusted that after Rob Manfred unequivocally told Players and fans that there would \u2018100%\u2019 be a 2020 season, he has decided to go back on this word and is now threatening to cancel the entire season,\u201d Clark said. \u201cAny implication that the Players Association has somehow delayed progress on health and safety protocols is completely false, as Rob has recently acknowledged the parties are \u2018very, very close.\u2019 This latest threat is just one more indication that Major League Baseball has been negotiating in bad faith since the beginning. This has always been about extracting additional pay cuts from Players and this is another day and another bad faith tactic in their ongoing campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pirates pitcher Jameson Taillon had the same thought as so many fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese so called \u201cnegotiations\u201d (or lack there of) have been sooo slimy, tone deaf, greedy, lying, leaking, and overall out of touch,\u201d he tweeted. \u201cThis is not even close to what you dream of as a kid! Sorry to everyone for this playing out through the media during a pandemic. Brutal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amir Garrett, a former two-sport star at St. John\u2019s, did his best to laugh at the increasingly absurd situation.<\/p>\n

\u201c@StJohnsBBall can y\u2019all check and see if I got any eligibility left?\u201d<\/p>\n

Toronto Blue Jays infielder Travis Shaw tweeted, \u201cEvery day somehow continues to get worse. MLB should be embarrassed\u2026 everyone involved. Im embarrassed. This is a joke.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
