Philippe<\/strong> has already explored classic horror films with his documentaries\u00a0<em>78\/52: Hitchcock\u2019s Shower Scene<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Memory: The Origins of Alien<\/em>, and now he\u2019s done it again with\u00a0<strong><em>Leap of Faith<\/em><\/strong>. This latest doc delves into\u00a0<strong><em>The Exorcist<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>William Friedki<\/strong>n\u2019s iconic classic about a little girl possessed by a demonic force. There have already been several documentaries devoted to\u00a0<em>The Exorcist<\/em>, but\u00a0<em>Leap of Faith<\/em> takes a cue from\u00a0Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow\u2019s documentary\u00a0<em>De Palma<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>by sticking with one source: William Friedkin.\u00a0<em>Leap of Faith<\/em> has been making the festival circuit and is now headed to Shudder.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Leap_of_Faith_Trailer\"><\/span><strong>Leap of Faith Trailer<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Leap of Faith - Official Trailer [HD] | A Shudder Exclusive\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p5FXjdKxgrA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post --><em>Leap of Faith <\/em>is described as a \u201clyrical and spiritual cinematic essay\u201d on <em>The Exorcist<\/em> that\u00a0\u201cexplores the uncharted depths of William Friedkin\u2019s mind\u2019s eye, the nuances of his filmmaking process, and the mysteries of faith and fate that have shaped his life and filmography.\u201d And it\u2019s not your typical documentary with multiple interviewees. Instead, this is the William Friedkin show, with Friedkin sitting down with director\u00a0Alexandre O. Philippe and discussing his career, but mostly discussing\u00a0<em>The Exorcist<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I caught the film at Sundance this year, and wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>With\u00a0<em>Leap of Faith<\/em>, Philippe says that he wanted to make a \u201cpersonal, intimate chamber film, and to reveal the real, raw, introspective Friedkin; unencumbered by the lore, tall tales, and mythologies that we are all too familiar with,\u201d and adds that he \u201cwatched the film for 30 days straight, and ended up conducting an epic 6-day one-on-one interview.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Philippe keeps things interesting by cutting in footage not just of\u00a0<em>The Exorcist<\/em>, but from many of Friedkin\u2019s other films, including\u00a0<em>Sorcerer<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Killer Joe<\/em>. Footage from\u00a0<em>Citizen Kane<\/em>,\u00a0<em>2001: A Space<\/em>\u00a0Odyssey, and more, also get some attention. It all works well, but when compared to\u00a0<em>78\/52<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Memory<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Leap of Faith<\/em>\u00a0feels oddly muted, even simplistic.\u00a0For those who have next to no knowledge about the making of\u00a0<em>The Exorcist<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Leap of Faith<\/em>\u00a0may be eye-opening indeed. But for those of us who know these stories inside and out,\u00a0<em>Leap of Faith<\/em>\u00a0may be a bit redundant, but it\u2019s never dull.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, if you\u2019re well-versed on the lore of the making of\u00a0<em>The Exorcist<\/em>, don\u2019t expect to find anything groundbreaking here.
