\n The king of cranky is about to be a lot more perturbed.<\/p>\n

Simon Cowell, the star and producer of \u201cAmerica\u2019s Got Talent,\u201d is taking longer to heal than expected from spinal surgery after he broke his back in three places this past summer. He is currently on a regimen of very strong painkillers and must remain confined largely to his bed, where he has round-the-clock care by nurses, according to The Sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also required to wear a brace.<\/p>\n

Despite initial good news<\/a> and optimism \u2014 his co-star Howie Mandel reporting in August that Cowell was \u201cdoing spectacularly well, considering,\u201d and confirming Cowell was already walking around \u2014 things have taken a turn for the worse.<\/p>\n

New speculation is that Cowell will be out of commission for at least six more months and is in a lot of pain \u2014and he won\u2019t even record messages for \u201cAGT\u201d from his bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a rough few weeks,\u201d a friend told the Sun. \u201cSimon\u2019s a fighter and fairly gung-ho. Naturally, he thought he\u2019d be out of action for a few weeks and then, if not doing iron man contests, at least be back on the showbiz circuit. Instead, he\u2019s had a setback from surgery to fuse two vertebrae and it has proven more complicated than a standard break.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cowell is being looked after at his Malibu spread by his girlfriend Lauren Silverman, the mother of their 6-year-old son Eric.<\/p>\n

While Cowell was thinking of taping messages for \u201cAGT\u201d and its sister show \u201cBritain\u2019s Got Talent,\u201d he has since nixed the idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cSimon is joking and in decent spirits,\u201d a source told The Sun. \u201cBut he\u2019s also quite vain and the idea of going on national TV with no studio make-up, and while on heavy-duty medication, didn\u2019t app<\/a>eal. So, unfortunately, he had to decline producers\u2019 requests.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
