Miraculously, he managed to keep his white tuxedo spotless. Valerie, 20 years old and already famous for starring as innocent Barbara Cooper on \u201cOne Day at a Time,\u201d only needed to straighten her smashed beloved\u2019s tie before they made a grand entrance at Grayhall mansion in Beverly Hills.<\/p>\n<p>The two had met just eight months before, backstage at a concert by his band Van Halen \u2014 in the midst of what was then the most extensive continental rock \u2019n\u2019 roll tour in history \u2014 and their courtship was a roller coaster. For one thing, the guitarist got walloped with a paternity suit while they were dating. They finished each other\u2019s sentences and knew what the other wanted,\u201d Bob Daitz, who road-managed Van Halen after Monk, told The Post. Not that Eddie was particularly hard to please. Daitz remembered Valerie dutifully making Eddie\u2019s favorite meal: \u201cHebrew National hot dogs, cooked for 1 minute, 47 seconds in the microwave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joel Selvin \u2014 who co-wrote the memoir <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Red-My-Uncensored-Life-Rock\/dp\/006200929X\/ref=sr_1_1?tag=pagesix-20\">\u201cRed: My Uncensored Life in Rock\u201d<\/a> with later Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar \u2014 recalled running into Valerie and Eddie backstage at the 1983 Us Festival, which Van Halen co-headlined. As The Clash revved up on stage, Selvin found himself sitting with the couple on an equipment trunk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEddie had a bottle of Jack Daniels; I had a bunch of joints,\u201d Selvin told The Post. \u201cValerie drank as much as he did and Eddie was hilarious. He was bombed. A guy came over and wanted an autograph on the back of his shirt. Eddie took a Sharpie and wrote his name as large as he could.\u201d The lovebirds \u201cwere like a couple of teenagers, drunk at a rock concert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But his bad-boy ways would, inevi\u00adtably, corrupt the TV star and eventually break her heart.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie was born in the Netherlands to a Dutch jazz-musician father and an \u00adIndonesian mother. When he moved to California at age 7, he didn\u2019t speak English, but quickly made up for lost time.<\/p>\n<p>He picked up the guitar early and was only 17 when he formed Van Halen along with his drummer-brother Alex, bassist Mark Stone (later to be replaced by Michael Anthony) and singer David Lee Roth. \u201cHe spent his whole life as a rock star and had never been anything but that,\u201d Martin Popoff, author of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Unchained-Alex-Van-Halen-ebook\/dp\/B00DK3Y24E?tag=pagesix-20\">\u201cUnchained: A Van Halen User Manual,\u201d<\/a> told The Post. \u201cSince his young teens in Pasadena, he was lauded as a star.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In control of his sound, Eddie could not handle the substances that ran roughshod over his life. It\u2019s a trait passed on to him by his father, Jan. \u201cI\u2019ve heard about Eddie discussing his father\u2019s drinking being a family struggle,\u201d Greg Renoff, author of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Van-Halen-Rising-Southern-California\/dp\/1770412638?tag=pagesix-20\">\u201cVan Halen Rising,\u201d<\/a> told The Post. \u201cA famous story Eddie told about his acclimation to alcohol was that [as a kid] he got bit on the hand by a German shepherd and was bleeding. He reportedly stashed lines of cocaine atop his amplifier during concerts and had a drug dealer who\u2019d <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> to him, anywhere in the world, with the finest \u00adPeruvian powder.<\/p>\n<p>Groupies were also a regular part of life, even if it didn\u2019t always involve \u00adactual sex. According to \u201cRunnin\u2019 with the Devil,\u201d Eddie and his bandmates once entertained a pair of naked girls known as the Ketchup Queens, dousing them in the condiment.<\/p>\n<p>Drugs and music soon took priority over Eddie\u2019s marriage. When Valerie joined him on the road, Eddie reportedly had her sleep in an adjoining bedroom so that he could stay up all night with his booze, cocaine and guitar.<\/p>\n<p>At first, the actress tried to keep up \u2014 and, perhaps, compete with groupies \u2014 and began using cocaine herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEd likes me skinny,\u201d she explained to Monk\u2019s fianc\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>But she overdid it and things got out of control to the point that even Eddie noticed. He implored her to stop snorting and start eating. In her 2008 book, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Losing-Gaining-Life-Back-Pound\/dp\/1416569685?tag=pagesix-20\">\u201cLosing It,\u201d<\/a> Valerie writes about her then-husband taking her for a chili cheese dog and fries and adds that he helped \u201csave me from a serious eating disorder.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote left\"><p>I don\u2019t know that she got sick of him. But I do think she got sick of the alcohol and the drugs.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"attribution\">\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Joel Selvin<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By 1984, she writes, \u201cI was done with coke. I didn\u2019t like the way it made me feel.\u201d She also didn\u2019t like the effect it was having on her marriage. \u201cIt made sense that I was angry,\u201d she writes. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t one thing or \u00adanother as much as it was everything together. There was a lot going on: Ed\u2019s fights with Dave [David Lee Roth], Ed\u2019s drinking and coke, his obsessive work habits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie\u2019s \u201cOne Day at a Time\u201d co-star Mackenzie Phillips recalled in her own book, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/High-Arrival-Memoir-Mackenzie-Phillips\/dp\/1439153868?tag=pagesix-20\">\u201cHigh on Arrival,\u201d<\/a> Eddie and Valerie dropping by her Manhattan loft for champagne. Eddie nipped into her bathroom \u201cand proceeded to Hoover up most of my coke,\u201d Phillips writes, adding that he whispered to her: \u201cDon\u2019t tell Val.\u201d In the elevator, \u201cEddie dropped his smokes. When he leaned over to pick them up, about 15 Quaaludes fell out of his pocket. Val was pissed. But we [Mackenzie and Eddie] must have taken them .\u2009.\u2009.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ratt singer Stephen Pearcy recalled in his autobiography how Eddie, a neighbor, would ask him to hide bottles of vodka in the bushes outside his house \u2014 so Eddie could come by and grab them without Valerie knowing.<\/p>\n<p>The couple\u2019s son, Wolfgang, was born in 1991, but parent\u00adhood did not resolve their problems.<\/p>\n<p>Through the 1990s, the couple\u2019s marriage slowly unraveled. Hagar wrote about a bombed Eddie knocking on his door at 2:30 a.m., demanding that they write a song together and admitting that \u00adValerie kicked him out for the night.<\/p>\n<p>By 2000, the actress had reached her own rock bottom. Eddie had undergone a frightening spate of medical maladies, including a hip replacement at the age of 44 and a diagnosis of tongue cancer, leading him to swear to her he had quit using drugs and alcohol. She believed him \u2014 until she found a folded-up bindle of cocaine his wallet.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie and Valerie split in 2001 and their divorce was finalized five years later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no question that Valerie had strong feelings for Eddie,\u201d Selvin said. \u201cI don\u2019t know that she got sick of him. The singer recalled visiting his former bandmate\u2019s 16,000-square-foot home. \u201cIt looked like vampires lived there,\u201d Hagar wrote. \u201cThere were bottles and cans all over the floor \u2026 There were spider webs everywhere. He had big blankets thrown over the windows \u2026 I had never seen a dirtier place in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite reports that Eddie was worth an estimated $100 million, Hagar described the rock star\u2019s digs as \u201clike a bum shack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, Hagar pointed out, most disturbing was that the man who had only recently overcome cancer seemed addicted to alcohol and cigarettes. The vocalist wrote, \u201cHe was missing a number of teeth and the ones he had left were black \u2026 He walked around all day, drinking cheap Shiraz out of the bottle. That\u2019s why his teeth were all black.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Hagar suggested that Eddie use a glass, the guitarist hoisted his bottle and replied, \u201cIt\u2019s in a glass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the ensuing decade-and-a-half, though, Eddie seemingly got it together. He married Janie Liszewski, a Hollywood stunt woman, in 2009, with Valerie in attendance. Likewise, he was a guest at her second wedding, to financial planner Tom Vitale, two years later.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie was also a major presence in the life of Wolfgang, now 29. The two teamed up in Van Halen in 2013, with Eddie and Valerie\u2019s son taking over bass duties. \u201cI\u2019m coming into my own,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/gw-archive\/interview-wolfgang-van-halen-talks-bass-different-kind-truth-and-more\">he told Guitar World<\/a> about performing on stage with his dad. \u201cI really feel like I\u2019m supposed to be doing this and that I have something to prove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eddie had reportedly been clean and sober since 2008. \u201cI thank God on my knees that I\u2019m alive and obviously to be sober and to be working with my son,\u201d he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vhnd.com\/2009\/06\/11\/eddie-van-halen-thanks-god-for-sobriety-and-guitar-riffs\/\">told Rolling Stone<\/a> in 2009. \u201cI\u2019m so damn blessed it\u2019s beyond words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Wolfgang revealed that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/10\/06\/eddie-van-halen-dead-at-65\/\">Eddie died Oct. 6<\/a>, at age 65, from cancer, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/10\/06\/eddie-van-halen-dead-ex-wife-valerie-bertinelli-posts-tribute-and-other-reactions\/\">tributes flooded social media<\/a> \u2014 from former bandmates; rockers including Gene Simmons, Nikki Sixx, Flea and Ozzy Osbourne; and famous fans such as Jimmy Kimmel and fashion designer Kenneth Cole.<\/p>\n<p>But the most touching of all was from Valerie. Tweeting a vintage photo of the couple posing with their newborn son, she wrote: \u201c40 years ago my life changed forever when I met you \u2026 I\u2019m so grateful Wolfie and I were able to hold you in your last moments.
