“#’SNL’ somehow screwed up the VP debate fly<\/strong>”

\n Everything was going so well \u2014 until the fly.<\/p>\n

After the misery of \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d\u2019s Trump-Biden debate sketch last week, the show desperately needed to improve on its all-important political satire. We\u2019re weeks away from a presidential election, and this material is their lifeblood.<\/p>\n

Well, the comedy show mostly fixed things, until they fumbled the most memorable moment of Wednesday\u2019s vice presidential debate: the fly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSNL\u201d mystifyingly thought a funny take on the insect that squatted on Mike Pence\u2019s head, and America\u2019s HDTVs, for more than two minutes was an insane science<\/a>-fiction storyline from 1986\u2019s \u201cThe Fly,\u201d in which Joe Biden (Jim Carrey) teleported to the venue, only to have his DNA mix with that of a bug.<\/p>\n

Before this strange, aspiring 1980s East Village performance art piece, the sketch had made amends for the clunkers from last week. First, they gave the moderator role to the show\u2019s best cast member: Kate McKinnon.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Susan Page, and I missed book club for this,\u201d she said, hilariously. McKinnon, like she always does, turned even her non-jokes into bliss.<\/p>\n

Beck Bennett\u2019s bone-dry Pence, a political spin on the vampire dad from \u201cTwilight,\u201d got laughs, too. His VP said he loved the state of Utah, where the debate took place, with just one reservation. \u201cEven though their basketball team is named after my greatest fear: jazz.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Kamala Harris, Maya Rudolph\u2019s best line was when she quickly flip-flopped after being asked about fracking.<\/p>\n

\u201cJoe Biden will frack you so good, Pennsylvania,\u201d she said, and then went into a harsh Philly accent. \u201cJoe Biden ain\u2019t banning fracking! Go Eagles!\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, ugh, a damn fly flew in.<\/p>\n

Carrey\u2019s gag started dumb, and got dumber. The actor, who got no entrance app<\/a>lause, already looks weak when he\u2019s put alongside \u201cSNL\u201d vets such as Rudolph and McKinnon, and playing a human-fly hybrid, he acted in a spastic manner straight outta \u201cThe Mask.\u201d Biden \u2014 did ya know? \u2014 isn\u2019t exactly a supernova of energy these days. And, yet more bizarre, because there was an online push to have Jeff Goldblum play the pest since he starred in \u201cThe Fly,\u201d Carrey went into a Goldblum impression. It was a cop-out that didn\u2019t land.<\/p>\n

To add to the muck, another insect showed up, played by Keenan Thompson. \u201cI\u2019m Herman Cain reincarnated as a damn fly,\u201d he said. What?<\/p>\n

We had a pretty good debate sketch going. The writing and the actors captured the essence of the night, there was no dead air and there were a few solid jokes. But, like \u201cSNL\u201d so often does, they felt compelled to cram in a bunch of unnecessary BS.<\/p>\n

Immedia<\/a>tely after that calamity, host Bill Burr gave a masterclass in how to synthesize a national moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you see Rick Moranis got sucker-punched on the Upper West Side?,\u201d Burr said of the \u201cGhostbusters\u201d actor\u2019s recent unprovoked assault. \u201cNew York is back, baby!\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
