“#’Karen’ calls 911 on pet store over mask dispute<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A woman called 911 for being denied entry into a California pet store because she wasn\u2019t wearing a mask \u2014 claiming she has a \u201creligious exemption right and God-given right\u201d that are protected under the Civil Rights Act.<\/p>\n

Aidan Bearpaw, who works at Bones-N-Scones in Palm Springs, recorded the tense encounter on Sunday and posted it to Facebook<\/a>, writing, \u201cI\u2019ve never had to deal with a karen calling 911 on me before all because I asked her to please wear a mask in the store.\u201d<\/p>\n

The six-minute video shows Bearpaw telling the woman she needs to wear a mask inside the store, where it\u2019s nearly closing time, or else he\u2019ll provide a \u201creasonable accommodation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman threatens to call 911, saying he\u2019s \u201ctechnically discriminating\u201d against her and that she can\u2019t wear a face covering because of health issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll have a panic attack, I will freak out, I will have an anxiety attack,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

The woman then asks Bearpaw to \u201caccommodate me by giving me an hour at the end of every day, an hour at the beginning of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no one in the store,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

Bearpaw shoots back, \u201cThere\u2019s me in the store,\u201d to which she responds, \u201cSo you stand 7,000 feet away from me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, I\u2019m just trying to do my job,\u201d he answers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m trying to make sure that I have rights,\u201d she says. \u201cYou\u2019ll make sure to hear that in the end you\u2019re the one who will be cited, not me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she dials 911 on speaker, telling the dispatcher, \u201cAs per the 1964 Civil Rights Act, I cannot be discriminated against. I do have a right to be able to breathe O2, not CO2, and I\u2019m being discriminated against right now at a store.\u201d<\/p>\n

She adds, \u201cI\u2019m being told I need to wear a mask even though I have a religious exemption right and a God-given right to be able to breathe O2 and not CO \u2026 medical exemption too.\u201d<\/p>\n

The dispatcher can be heard telling the woman that there is a city ordinance mandating face coverings inside stores. She says the store has a \u201cright to refuse service\u201d and then tells her she\u2019s sending out an officer.<\/p>\n

The woman tells the dispatcher she\u2019s leaving, while insisting that she\u2019s in the \u201cright\u201d before heading back to her car.<\/p>\n

Bearpaw told Storyful that the woman called 911 on him the next day, sending police to the store.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was feeling the public backlash and dispatched police on me again,\u201d he said. \u201cMy bosses were initially furious. It was very possible I was going to be fired. My co-workers were all very supportive and made it clear there would be consequences if I was terminated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bones-N-Scones\u2019 consulting general<\/a> manager backed up Bearpaw in an interview with local network KESQ.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m biased, but it\u2019s a shining example of how just doing what\u2019s right,\u201d Smith said. \u201cStanding your ground overcomes all of those things. Aidan won for us that day, he didn\u2019t just want it for Bone-N-Scones. He won for the city of Palm Springs, but United States and for humanity in general.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
