“Ridley Scott Would Still Like to Make an \u2018Alien: Covenant\u2019 Sequel<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Ridley Scott<\/strong> has helmed two prequels to his classic sci-fi horror film\u00a0Alien<\/em> \u2013\u00a0Prometheus<\/em> and\u00a0Alien: Covenant<\/em>. Those films have their fans (like me!), but they didn\u2019t exactly blow up the box office. As a result, the fate of Scott\u2019s proposed third\u00a0Alien<\/em> prequel remains in doubt, and that doubt has only increased since Disney picked up Alien<\/em> franchise owner Fox.\u00a0But Scott hasn\u2019t given up hope just yet.<\/p>\n

In 2012, Ridley Scott\u2019s\u00a0Prometheus<\/em> hit theaters, where it was met with a mixed reaction. While the film had its flaws, it managed to become a hit, grossing\u00a0$403.4 million on a\u00a0$120\u2013130 million budget.\u00a0Prometheus<\/em> was followed-up with\u00a0Alien: Covenant<\/em> in 2017. That film seemed even more polarizing, and was considered a box office disapp<\/a>ointment after grossing $240 million. Scott clearly had plans for more films \u2013\u00a0Covenant<\/em> even ends on a cliffhanger, of sorts \u2013 but the lukewarm reaction seemed to put any future prequel sequels on pause.<\/p>\n

But Scott still wants to make another movie. Speaking with the\u00a0LA Times, the director said that he feels \u201cthere\u2019s a lot of mileage in Alien<\/em>,\u201d adding:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I always thought when I was making the first one [was] why would a creature like this be made and why was it travel<\/a>ing in what I always thought was a kind of war-craft, which was carrying a cargo of these eggs. What was the purpose of the vehicle and what was the purpose of the eggs? That\u2019s the thing to question \u2014 who, why, and for what purpose is the next idea, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I have my doubts Disney \u2013 who now own the\u00a0Alien<\/em> franchise \u2013 will want to let Scott make another one of these prequels, but I\u2019d be happy to be proven wrong. I think\u00a0Prometheus<\/em> is flawed, but it has its moments.\u00a0Alien: Covenant<\/em>, however, is a wonderful, misunderstood movie, with Scott blending the\u00a0Alien<\/em> mythos with gothic flourishes. It\u2019s more in line with\u00a0Frankenstein<\/em> than it is an\u00a0Alien<\/em> movie \u2013 which is why I understand why some people don\u2019t care for it. But I\u2019m all-in on whatever bold weirdness Scott wants to throw together, especially if he continues the story of\u00a0Michael Fassbender\u2019s deranged android David.<\/p>\n

In the past, Scott revealed he wanted to make two more movies<\/a> after\u00a0Covenant<\/em>, with the last movie leading directly into\u00a0Alien<\/em>. However, that plan changed a little. On the commentary track for\u00a0Covenant<\/em>, Scott states that a sequel was being written, with Fassbender and his\u00a0Covenant<\/em> co-stars Katherine Waterston and Danny McBride returning. He also added that this third film would complete the prequel trilogy. Several years have passed since then, and another film seems highly unlikely at this point. But it\u2019s good to know Scott still has the idea on his mind.<\/p>\n
