{"id":87008,"date":"2020-10-12T01:07:56","date_gmt":"2020-10-11T22:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/schools-arent-covid-19-super-spreaders-new-data-suggests\/"},"modified":"2020-10-12T01:07:56","modified_gmt":"2020-10-11T22:07:56","slug":"schools-arent-covid-19-super-spreaders-new-data-suggests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/schools-arent-covid-19-super-spreaders-new-data-suggests\/","title":{"rendered":"#Schools aren\u2019t COVID-19 super-spreaders, new data suggests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Schools aren\u2019t COVID-19 super-spreaders, new data suggests<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                        Elementary and high schools do not <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to be COVID-19 super-spreaders, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/statsiq.co1.qualtrics.com\/public-dashboard\/v0\/dashboard\/5f62eaee4451ae001535c839#\/dashboard\/5f62eaee4451ae001535c839?pageId=Page_1ac6a6bc-92b6-423e-9f7a-259a18648318\">new data suggests<\/a> \u2014 a finding that threatens to turn some pandemic theories on their head.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics involving 200,000 schoolkids from 47 states in the last two weeks of September yielded an overall coronavirus infection rate of just .13 percent among students and .24 percent for staffers, according to Brown University economics Professor <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/watson.brown.edu\/people\/faculty\/oster\">Emily Oster<\/a> and her team of number-crunchers.<\/p>\n<p>The figures translate into what would be roughly 1.3 infections for a school with 1,000 kids in the two-week period, and 2.2 positive tests for every 1,000 staffers in the same time frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it was thought the minute we get people together in schools, there would be these huge outbreaks \u2014 and that hasn\u2019t come to pass,\u2019\u2019 Oster told The Post on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>She added that it is crucial to weigh the dangers of the virus against the drawbacks to online learning for students, teachers and parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s tricky to say, \u2018Why not be safe and do the safest thing\u2019 \u201d and go to all-remote learning, Oster said. \u201cWell, you\u2019re not looking at the e-mails I\u2019m getting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recounted how a woman wrote her Sunday morning \u201cand said her daughter\u2019s best friend killed herself and left a note saying, \u2018I can\u2019t handle the way school is.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dead student was in high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is just an anecdote, but I think we are forgetting the human cost on the other side some of the time,\u2019\u2019 Oster said.<\/p>\n<p>The prof specifically called out New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for allegedly treating schools as if they were major coronavirus breeding grounds without the figures to back it up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocratic governors who love to flaunt their pro-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> bona fides in comparison with the anti-science Trump administration don\u2019t seem to be aware of this growing body of evidence,\u2019\u2019 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/10\/schools-arent-superspreaders\/616669\/\">Oster wrote<\/a> in The Atlantic magazine Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Monday, for instance, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo claimed that businesses were not \u2018mass spreaders,\u2019 as opposed to schools, and subsequently announced that he would close schools in hot-spot areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added to The Post, \u201cHe said schools are a big risk. \u2026 I don\u2019t think he has good data showing that.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16436944\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img class=\"size-nypost-large-desktop-uncropped wp-image-16436944 lazyload\" alt=\"Students in a classroom at One World Middle School in the Bronx.\" width=\"662\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/50404451131_e18c349b84_o.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/50404451131_e18c349b84_o.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/50404451131_e18c349b84_o.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/50404451131_e18c349b84_o.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=662 662w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/50404451131_e18c349b84_o.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1324 1324w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 662px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span>Students in a classroom at One World Middle School in the Bronx.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Michael Appleton<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A spokesman with the governor\u2019s office responded to The Post on Sunday, \u201cWe know mass gatherings, congregate settings have the highest rate of transmission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchools do have a congregate setting,\u2019\u2019 the rep said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the governor has been pushing testing in schools because more data is needed and \u201cnot enough is being done in the city\u201d so far to get adequate statistics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been flying blind,\u2019\u2019 the spokesman said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what\u2019s not acceptable.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>As The Post reported Saturday, the number of COVID-19 cases in the city\u2018s public schools went up 67 percent in the past week and involved 98 students and 207 teachers.
