{"id":87130,"date":"2020-10-12T07:19:28","date_gmt":"2020-10-12T04:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/giant-alligator-snapping-turtle-shell-shocked-dc-suburb-in-summer-2020\/"},"modified":"2020-10-12T07:19:28","modified_gmt":"2020-10-12T04:19:28","slug":"giant-alligator-snapping-turtle-shell-shocked-dc-suburb-in-summer-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/giant-alligator-snapping-turtle-shell-shocked-dc-suburb-in-summer-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"#Giant &#8216;alligator snapping turtle&#8217; shell-shocked DC suburb in summer 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Giant &#8216;alligator sn<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing turtle&#8217; shell-shocked DC suburb in summer 2020<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                        We\u2019re almost two years away from the next \u201cJurassic World\u201d installment \u2014 but if you\u2019re fiending for giant reptiles gone wild, here\u2019s a fun tale from the summer.<\/p>\n<p>While residents of Alexandria, Virginia, are used to seeing wildlife like deer, raccoons and even the occasional fox, they started to freak out when sightings of a prehistoric-looking beast started to become more frequent in May and June.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out a 65-pound alligator snapping turtle (yes, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alligator_snapping_turtle\">that\u2019s a thing<\/a>) was inexplicably roaming the streets of the Washington, DC, suburb.<\/p>\n<p>The Fairfax County Police reported that it started to get calls about the terrifying (albeit slow) creature and alerted animal control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Animal Protection Police (APP) received a call about a large turtle that was repeatedly crossing the road in a residential area of Alexandria,\u201d the Fairfax County Police Department wrote\u00a0in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/103085949733551\/posts\/3992721030770004\/?d=n\">a June 15 Facebook post<\/a> alongside pictures of the menacing-looking turtle. \u201cMuch to their surprise, it was a 65-pound alligator snapping turtle!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aside from its scary appearance, animal control was surprised to see the turtle \u2014 because it\u2019s not native to the area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15856242\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone aligncenter\"><img class=\"wp-image-15856242 size-nypost-large-desktop-uncropped lazyload\" alt=\"Police and wildlife officials suspect the 65-pound reptile, dubbed Lord Fairfax, was bred in captivity then released into the wild.\" width=\"662\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/giant-turtle-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/giant-turtle-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/giant-turtle-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/giant-turtle-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=662 662w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/giant-turtle-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1324 1324w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 662px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span>Police and wildlife officials suspect the 65-pound reptile, dubbed Lord Fairfax, was bred in captivity then released into the wild.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Fairfax County Police Department<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018common\u2019 snapping turtle (<em>Chelydra serpentina<\/em>) is the species native to Virginia, while the alligator snapping turtle is native to river drainages that flow in the Gulf of Mexico, east to Georgia and the panhandle of Florida, and westward to East Texas,\u201d the Virginia Department of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a> and Inland Fisheries wrote on in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/88223336497\/posts\/10156985784721498\/?d=n\">a June 11 Facebook post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they believe it was a captive-bred turtle that was released into the wild.<\/p>\n<p>The APP safely captured the large animal and transported it to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter before the county\u2019s Wildlife Management Specialist arranged to transfer the turtle to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.<\/p>\n<p>There, they named him Lord Fairfax before he found a permanent home at the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk. The zoo renamed him Yidaro, per <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/virginiazoo.org\/2020\/07\/yidaro\/\">a July post on its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Incredibly, Lord Fairfax is still just a baby, per the APP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany species of turtle can live a minimum of 50 years and others more than 100,\u201d they wrote. \u201cAt 65 lbs, this one was a youngster, as this species can reach weights exceeding 200 lbs.
