“#Study reveals big regional divides in views on AI risks<\/strong>”

\n A new study<\/a> of perceptions on using\u00a0AI in decision-making shows views on its risks and benefits vary greatly between regions and nations.<\/p>\n

Researchers from the Oxford Commission on AI and Good Governance revealed the findings after analyzing\u00a0survey data from a sample of 154,195 respondents in 142 countries collected for the\u00a0<\/span>2019 World Risk Poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One question asked respondents whether\u00a0\u201cmachines or robots that can think and make decisions, often known as artificial intelligence\u201d will mostly help or harm people in their country in the next 20 years.<\/p>\n

Worries that it\u00a0will be mostly harmful were highest in\u00a0Latin America and the Caribbean (49% of respondents), North America (47%), and Europe (43%), and lowest in East Asia (11%) and\u00a0Southeast Asia (25%).<\/p>\n

People in China app<\/a>ear\u00a0particularly enthusiastic about the prospects. Despite numerous<\/a>\u00a0reports<\/a> of Xi Jinping\u2019s government using AI\u00a0to foster totalitarian rule, only 9% of respondents in the country said the tech\u00a0will be mostly harmful, while 59% believe it will be mostly beneficial.<\/p>\n

The study also explored how opinions vary by profession.\u00a0Over 40% of\u00a0construction, manufacturing, and service workers view AI as mostly harmful, which is unsurprising given their potential vulnerability to automation.<\/p>\n

The most optimistic profession was executives in business or government, 47% of whom believe AI will be mostly helpful. Office workers, professionals such as doctors or engineers, and agricultural workers were also more likely to be positive about the prospects.<\/p>\n

The study team says further research is required to explain the variations, and whether they relate to differences such as IT environments or cultural and social<\/a> institutions:<\/p>\n

Understanding public confidence in AI and machine learning is vital to the successful implementation of such systems in government. Each major misstep in AI will have consequences for public interest in having government agencies involve AI systems in governance.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The researchers note the growing use of AI in\u00a0policymaking and governance around the world has further accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. But\u00a0citizens in many countries clearly need convincing that the benefits\u00a0outweigh the risks.<\/p>\n
