{"id":87779,"date":"2020-10-12T21:44:37","date_gmt":"2020-10-12T18:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/scientists-return-from-arctic-with-wealth-of-climate-data\/"},"modified":"2020-10-12T21:44:37","modified_gmt":"2020-10-12T18:44:37","slug":"scientists-return-from-arctic-with-wealth-of-climate-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/scientists-return-from-arctic-with-wealth-of-climate-data\/","title":{"rendered":"#Scientists return from Arctic with wealth of climate data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Scientists return from Arctic with wealth of climate data<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                        BERLIN \u2014 An icebreaker carrying scientists on a year-long international effort to study the high Arctic has returned to its home port in Germany carrying a wealth of data that will help researchers better predict climate change in the decades to come.<\/p>\n<p>The RV Polarstern arrived Monday in the North Sea port of Bremerhaven, from where she <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/724b626171be4e76a7ed51bbfc11b406\">set off more than a year ago<\/a> prepared for bitter cold and polar bear encounters \u2014 but not for the pandemic lockdowns that almost scuttled the mission half-way through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe basically achieved everything we set out to do,\u201d the expedition\u2019s leader, Markus Rex, told The Associated Press by satellite phone as it left the polar circle last week. \u201cWe conducted measurements for a whole year with just a short break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ship had to break away from its position in the far north for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/332f7874b39b8a011314e67316c8c2b6\">three weeks in May<\/a> to pick up supplies and rotate team members after coronavirus restrictions disrupted carefully laid <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening,\u201d she said. \u201cWe need to get all the help we can because it\u2019s important to understand what\u2019s going on and the more people help out, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rex, the expedition leader, noted that the ship encountered unusually thin and mushy conditions in the region above northern Greenland this summer that allowed them to make an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2b290e199aef10bd18683bb021133052\">unplanned detour<\/a> to the North Pole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are watching the Arctic sea ice die,\u201d said Rex, adding that he thinks it\u2019s possible there may be no summer sea ice in the Arctic soon.
