Johnson via AP<br \/>\n          <\/span><br \/>\n  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>       Johnson &amp; Johnson has paused clinical trials for its COVID-19 vaccine candidate after an unexplained illness by a participant<\/p>\n<p> The drug maker <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jnj.com\/our-company\/johnson-johnson-temporarily-pauses-all-dosing-in-our-janssen-covid-19-vaccine-candidate-clinical-trials\" class=\"icon none\">announced<\/a> Monday night that the 60,000-patient, late-stage trials have been put on hold and enrollment has been halted, citing \u00a0\u201can unexplained illness in a study participant.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       J&amp;J<br \/>\n        JNJ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201724570\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.57%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       noted that such pauses \u201care not uncommon in clinical trials,\u201d and said there would be \u201ca careful review of all of the medical information before deciding whether to restart the study.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rival AstraZeneca<br \/>\n        AZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200304487\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.00%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       paused the late-stage trials of its coronavirus vaccine candidate in early September after an unexplained illness by a participant in the U.K.  Regulators in the U.K., Brazil, India and South Africa have since allowed AstraZeneca\u2019s\u00a0trials to resume, though it remains on hold in the U.S. as the  Food and Drug Administration  has widened its investigation.<\/p>\n<p>There are seven coronavirus candidates being tested in the U.S., with at least four moving to late-stage trials.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson &amp;
