{"id":88040,"date":"2020-10-13T02:04:24","date_gmt":"2020-10-12T23:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/city-of-syracuse-plans-to-remove-christopher-columbus-statue\/"},"modified":"2020-10-13T02:04:24","modified_gmt":"2020-10-12T23:04:24","slug":"city-of-syracuse-plans-to-remove-christopher-columbus-statue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/city-of-syracuse-plans-to-remove-christopher-columbus-statue\/","title":{"rendered":"#City of Syracuse plans to remove Christopher Columbus statue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#City of Syracuse plans to remove Christopher Columbus statue<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                        The City of Syracuse plans to remove its Christopher Columbus statue and rename a surrounding plaza called Columbus Circle \u2014 leading to outrage by Italian-American groups.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Ben Walsh \u2014 an Independent \u2014 announced on Oct. 9 that the sculpture of the controversial explorer would be canned after opposition from Native Americans and progressives led a special committee to call for its removal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand this decision has caused pain for some in our Italian American community, and I am sorry for that, but I truly believe this will ultimately bring our community closer together,\u201d Walsh said in making the announcement.<\/p>\n<p>He added that he hopes \u201cthis decision will bring about healing for the Onondagas,\u201d a local Native American tribe that called for the removal of the statue as a symbol of colonialism.<\/p>\n<p>Italian Americans ripped the decision Monday during an annual wreath laying ceremony in front of the sculpture in observance of Columbus Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do feel hurt, not only personally but for the people that came before me. My parents, my grandparents. What they did here in Syracuse working in the factories, working as laborers to raise families,\u201d lamented Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli (D-Syracuse) to the The Post via a phone interview following a speech at the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve lost the understanding of what the older generations went through,\u201d said Magnarelli.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-nypost-large-desktop-uncropped wp-image-16442741 lazyload\" alt=\"Columbus Day gathering in Syracuse, N.Y.\" width=\"662\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/syracuse-columbus-51.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/syracuse-columbus-51.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/syracuse-columbus-51.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/syracuse-columbus-51.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=662 662w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/syracuse-columbus-51.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1324 1324w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 662px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Columbus effigy will be taken down from the top of the monument, as well as the faces of four Native Americans and plaques surrounding the base of the statue depicting Columbus\u2019 exploration into the New World, according to the Mayor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Walsh said in a missive Friday the site will be revamped in consultation with the Italian American community to continue to honor their heritage.<\/p>\n<p>But Nick Pirro, former county executive and presently the vice president of the Columbus Monument Corp. which runs the annual Columbus Day celebration in Syracuse, told The Post they plan to explore legal action and has been in consultation with lawyers on how to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t know until Friday what the mayor\u2019s decision would be, we were surprised,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s disrespectful to the Italian people of Syracuse and Onondaga County who went out with the blessing of the city, raised the money, worked hard to raise the money to pay for everything,\u201d he added, noting the sculpture was erected in the 1930s and was made possible through local monetary contributions.<\/p>\n<p>Pirro said he was a part of the action committee and offered several propositions to include other groups supporting the addition of Indigenous Peoples Day, but all were rejected.<\/p>\n<p>The Onondaga Nation put out a statement over the summer saying they understood the need for the Italian American need to celebrate their history, but that Columbus was not the way to do it.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-nypost-large-desktop-uncropped wp-image-16442743 lazyload\" alt=\"A ststue of Christopher Columbus in Syracuse, N.Y.\" width=\"294\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/syracuse-columbus-52.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/syracuse-columbus-52.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/syracuse-columbus-52.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/syracuse-columbus-52.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=294 294w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/syracuse-columbus-52.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=588 588w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 294px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur own monuments, beautiful lakes, streams, rivers, and the earth itself, has suffered greatly as a direct result principle of the Doctrine of Discovery to which Columbus used to claim the lands in the name of the Spanish crown,\u201d they said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Betty Lyons, Onondaga and the head of the American Indian Law Alliance, also sat on the committee and told The Post in a statement: \u201cThere were long and sometimes contentious discussions and Mayor Walsh has made the correct decision and we <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp;
