There was no streaming anything back in those days, so to watch something new, I had to buy a region-free DVD player and take gambles on movies I imported from YesAsia.com. Yeah, I\u2019m old. <\/p>\n<p>That said, Japanese horror is still alive and well even if the J-horror craze has faded (and not all of them feature girls with long black hair hanging in their faces!). Some of the genre\u2019s classics still hold up really well and are well worth the rewatch. If you\u2019re looking for new titles you\u2019ve never seen before, those are here too. <\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-the-8-best-japanese-horror-movies\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_8_best_Japanese_horror_movies\"><\/span>The 8 best Japanese horror movies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"h-ringu-1998\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ringu_1998\"><\/span><em>Ringu<\/em> (1998)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I assume anyone interested in this list has probably already seen <em>Ringu<\/em> (or <em>Ring<\/em>, as it\u2019s also sometimes called). If you haven\u2019t, sit your ass down and watch it, because it\u2019s the soil most of these other Japanese horror films sprouted from. Adapted from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/36OkIwG\">an excellent Japanese novel of the same name<\/a> by Koji Suzuki, <em>Ringu<\/em> follows journalist Asakawa as he investigates strange circumstances stemming from his niece\u2019s death. From there he finds a very strange VHS tape that will cause him to die in seven days if he cannot solve its mystery. I\u2019m sorry to report none of them are very good, but the original film still has some terrific moments. The Tokunaga family\u2019s home is cursed and at first no one knows why. But when the house\u2019s sodden history comes to light, it\u2019s obvious they are dealing with something not of this world.<em> Ju-On<\/em> shows its age in some places and functions better as a series of scares than a fully fleshed out narrative. Nobuhiko Obayashi\u2019s film follows Gorgeous and her friends, Prof, Melody, Kung Fu, Mac, Sweet, and Fantasy as they go to visit her aunt in the countryside. What happens after they get there is best described as an acid-fueled fever dream. Equal parts strange and hilarious, <em>House<\/em> is not really scary, but it certainly is in a class by itself in the world of Japanese horror.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/criterion-production.s3.amazonaws.com\/carousel-files\/106d442a7c86c1abd8fc8477a24a5fb2.jpeg\" alt=\"House (1977) | The Criterion Collection\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/criterion-production.s3.amazonaws.com\/carousel-files\/106d442a7c86c1abd8fc8477a24a5fb2.jpeg\" alt=\"House (1977) | The Criterion Collection\"><figcaption class=\"dd-article-img-credit\">Unrecorded<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background has-bondi-blue-background-color\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3d9yfQP\">WATCH ON AMAZON<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<h3 id=\"h-creepy-2016\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Creepy_2016\"><\/span><em>Creepy<\/em> (2016)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I am a huge fan of Kiyoshi Kurosawa\u2019s films (<em>Cure<\/em> and <em>Pulse<\/em> are both must-see horror) but I chose <em>Creepy<\/em> here it\u2019s likely lesser known among his Japanese horror catalog. Ex-detective Koichi Takakura and his wife move into a new house and discover their neighbor, Masayuki Nishino, seems a bit off. When Takakura\u2019s old colleagues come to see him about a strange case, they find it just may have a link to the house next door. A perfect blend of crime and personal drama, <em>Creepy<\/em> has some moments you genuinely will never see coming.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.mubicdn.net\/images\/notebook\/post_images\/22406\/images-w1400.jpg?1476886727\" alt=\"Review: Kiyoshi Kurosawa's &quot;Creepy&quot; on Notebook | MUBI\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.mubicdn.net\/images\/notebook\/post_images\/22406\/images-w1400.jpg?1476886727\" alt=\"Review: Kiyoshi Kurosawa's &quot;Creepy&quot; on Notebook | MUBI\"><figcaption class=\"dd-article-img-credit\">Unrecorded<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background has-bondi-blue-background-color\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3iGXpaB\">WATCH ON AMAZON<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<h3 id=\"h-battle-royale-2000\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Battle_Royale_2000\"><\/span><em>Battle Royale<\/em> (2000)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Anyone who\u2019s read the source material or seen <em>Battle Royale<\/em> is understandably snarky about <em>The Hunger <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a>s<\/em>. The two stories are quite similar: both feature corrupt governments that pit gangs of teenagers in a secluded space to fight to the death. <em>Battle Royale<\/em> is brutal in a way that <em>The Hunger Games<\/em> never could be, however (and if you want to twist the knife even further, read <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2SA7sDJ\">the superlative manga series<\/a>). <em>Battle Royale<\/em> was heavily criticized in Japan upon its release for its violence, but eventually became a bestseller. One thing the film does lack is the emotional depth of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/anime-manga\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"6\" title=\"Anime || Manga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manga<\/a>, but it\u2019s still a wild ride well worth taking.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/opuszine.us\/_assets\/stills\/_largeCropped\/battle-royale.jpg\" alt=\"Battle Royale\u201d by Kinji Fukasaku (Review) - Opus\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/opuszine.us\/_assets\/stills\/_largeCropped\/battle-royale.jpg\" alt=\"Battle Royale\u201d by Kinji Fukasaku (Review) - Opus\"><figcaption class=\"dd-article-img-credit\">Unrecorded<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background has-bondi-blue-background-color\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3d5OHlb\">WATCH ON AMAZON<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<h3 id=\"h-one-cut-of-the-dead-2019\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"One_Cut_of_the_Dead_2019\"><\/span><em>One Cut of the Dead<\/em> (2019)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Most of our Japanese horror list has been serious so far, but <em>One Cut of the Dead<\/em> is anything but that. It\u2019s gloriously low-budget, incredibly silly and fun. Even the plot is ridiculous: a small crew shooting a zombie film gets attacked by real ones. It never once tries to take itself seriously, which makes it all the better. And it stands by the title by presenting the entire film in a single take. One thing a lot of reviews say about <em>One Cut of the Dead<\/em> is that it has tremendous heart. When he meets Yukio Murata, the owner of another fish shop in town, the two become fast friends. But Murata is a serial killer and Shamoto is quickly ensnared in his web. <em>Cold Fish<\/em> is brutal and brilliant (trigger warning: there is a rape scene near the end) and not for the thin-skinned. Director Takashi Miike takes us to meet Shigeharu Aoyama, a widower decides he\u2019s ready to try his hand at love again. He goes about it in a shifty way: by holding a fake audition for a leading lady with some help from a film industry friend. He meets Asami, a stunning woman who seems like the perfect, demure princess he longs for.
