\n She\u2019s Carrie-ing on.<\/p>\n

Legendary costume designer Patricia Field \u2014 the woman who made Sarah Jessica Parker a fashion icon as Carrie Bradshaw on \u201cSex and the City\u201d \u2014 has a new muse: Lily Collins, star of the buzzy Netflix series<\/a> \u201cEmily in Paris.\u201d The actress plays a 20-something Midwesterner who finds herself working at a marketing firm in the French capital and becoming a social<\/a>-media influencer overnight.<\/p>\n

And one star of the show came straight from Field\u2019s own East Village closet.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of Emily\u2019s signature items was my personal phone case that looked like a [retro point-and-shoot] camera,\u201d Field, 78, told The Post. \u201cEmily is constantly taking photos in the show for Instagram and other social media.\u201d<\/p>\n

Field calls the accessory \u201cEmily\u2019s \u2018Carrie\u2019 necklace\u201d \u2014 a shout-out to the gold nameplate jewelry Parker wore that launched a million imitators. It\u2019s \u201creceived a very positive reaction from fans,\u201d Field said of the whimsical case, which she picked up in South Korea. The show is all about \u201cfashion statements,\u201d Field said.<\/p>\n

Like with \u201cSex and the City\u201d and Field\u2019s other projects, including \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada\u201d and the TV Land series \u201cYounger,\u201d the wardrobe is a mashup of trendy and vintage, high fashion and a little bit of ridiculousness. Looks such as a Barbie-pink mini and trench coat, with matching pumps and knee-high socks, are also a visual feast for an audience stuck at home in sweatpants. Which may be why the rom-com series was Netflix\u2019s third-most-watched offering<\/a>\u00a0in the US as of Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wants to impress,\u201d said Field of the heroine. She called Emily\u2019s colorful silk button-down with a hot-air-balloon motif a \u201cnod to her excitement at being there \u2014 it was intentionally cliche.\u201d<\/p>\n

Show creator and longtime Field collaborator Darren Star brought her in early, before roles were even cast, to help shape the characters. \u201cI love working with Darren and give him my casting suggestions,\u201d said Field, who likes to review audition tapes and assess an actor\u2019s \u201cbody form\u201d before crafting a signature style.<\/p>\n

Field takes Emily from flannels and Keds to tr\u00e9s chic confections by French designers. She enlisted a local, costumer Marylin Fitoussi<\/a>, to show her how to shop like a Parisian. \u201cI needed someone like her to guide me to locations as well as aesthetics,\u201d said Field, noting that the character \u201cincreasingly picks up cues from the French, including [her] beret and the neck scarf.\u201d<\/p>\n

She relied especially on the vintage store Les Merveilles de Babellou in Paris\u2019 Clignancourt neighborhood. It supplied her with \u201crare pieces\u201d and trendy designers, including Stephane Rolland and Alexandre Vauthier, whose strapless black top she paired with a tulle skirt by New Yorker David Dalrymple for a party Emily attends in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.<\/p>\n

And while Carrie had a Manolo Blahnik addiction, Emily has a penchant for Christian Louboutin heels \u2014 a love that mirrors Collins\u2019 real-life taste. \u201cLily loved Louboutins and we were able to provide her a great selection thanks to [the brand\u2019s] enthusiasm,\u201d said Field, noting that the designer provided several pairs of custom metallic mules for \u201cSex and the City\u201d as well.<\/p>\n

One of Field\u2019s favorite Emily outfits is \u201ca green Chanel jacket that I used [for] an oversize look \u2026 That interpretation made it youthful, as when I put Carrie in a Chanel jacket with a pair of jeans.\u201d She\u2019s also fond of a hand-painted yellow bag by Jody Morlock and a patchwork dress by Dope Tavio, which Field called \u201cpart street and part couture.\u201d Both are from ArtFashion, the costumer\u2019s Lower East Side boutique.<\/p>\n

Field feels fortunate to keep it open during these trying times. As a woman who shops for a living, she\u2019s devastated that her go-to NYC fashion emporium has fallen victim to the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy favorite store has been Century 21, as I find varied surprises there as opposed to what\u2019s trendy for the season,\u201d Field told The Post of the local department store chain that filed for bankruptcy last month. \u201cI will miss them.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
