\n SRINAGAR, India \u2014 At least three Indian soldiers, including a senior army officer, were killed in a confrontation with Chinese troops along their disputed frontier high in the Himalayas where thousands of soldiers on both sides have been facing off for over a month, the Indian army said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The incident is the first confrontation between the two Asian giants in which soldiers have died since 1975.<\/p>\n

The Indian army said in a statement that a \u201cviolent faceoff\u201d took place in Galwan valley in the Ladakh region on Monday night \u201cwith casualties on both sides.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe loss of lives on the Indian side includes an officer and two soldiers,\u201d the statement said. \u201cSenior military officials of the two sides are currently meeting at the venue to defuse the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

China, for its part, accused Indian forces along their Himalayan border of carrying out \u201cprovocative attacks\u201d on its troops, leading to \u201cserious physical conflicts\u201d between the sides.<\/p>\n

Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian gave no details on any casualties on the Chinese side, but said Tuesday that China had strongly protested the incident while still being committed to maintaining \u201cpeace and tranquility\u201d along the disputed and heavily militarized border.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what is shocking is that on June 15, the Indian troops seriously violated the consensus of the two sides, crossed the border illegally twice and carried out provocative attacks on Chinese personnel, resulting in serious physical conflicts between the two border forces,\u201d Zhao said.<\/p>\n

Thousands of soldiers from the two countries, backed by armored trucks and artillery, have been facing off just a few hundred meters (yards) apart for more than a month in the Ladakh region near Tibet. Army officers and diplomats have held a series<\/a> of meetings to try to end the impasse, with no breakthrough.<\/p>\n

Indian officials say Chinese soldiers crossed the boundary in Ladakh in early May at three different points, erecting tents and guard posts and ignoring verbal warnings to leave. That triggered shouting matches, stone-throwing and fistfights, much of it replayed on television news<\/a> channels and social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

China has sought to downplay the confrontation while saying the two sides were communicating through both their front-line military units and their respective embassies to resolve issues.<\/p>\n

Though skirmishes aren\u2019t new along their long disputed frontier, the standoff at Ladakh\u2019s Galwan Valley, where India is building a strategic road connecting the region to an airstrip<\/a> close to China, has escalated in recent weeks.<\/p>\n

India and China fought a border war in 1962 that also spilled into Ladakh. The two countries have been trying to settle their border dispute since the early 1990s without success.<\/p>\n

Since then, soldiers from the two sides have frequently faced off along their long frontier that stretches from Ladakh in the north to the Indian state of Sikkim in the northeast.<\/p>\n

The Indian army statement said the \u201cviolent faceoff\u201d occurred \u201cduring the de-escalation process underway in the Galwan Valley.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
