Justin Simien<\/strong>\u2018s horror-satire\u00a0Bad Hair<\/em><\/strong> is headed to Hulu this month, but if you\u2019re craving the theatrical experience, here\u2019s some good news<\/a> \u2013 it\u2019s going to drive-ins, too. Neon will be releasing\u00a0Bad Hair<\/em> in drive-in theaters\u00a0in major markets across the country including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New Orleans, Detroit, Austin, Sacramento, and Las Vegas, before hitting Hulu on October 23<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Bad Hair<\/em>,\u00a0an ambitious young woman (Elle Lorraine) living in 1989 \u201cgets a weave in order to succeed in the image-obsessed world of music television. However, her flourishing career comes at a great cost when she realizes that her new hair may have a mind of its own. Elle Lorraine<\/strong>,\u00a0Vanessa Williams<\/strong>, Lena Waithe<\/strong>, Laverne Cox<\/strong>, Jay Pharoah<\/strong>, Kelly Rowland<\/strong>, Blair Underwood<\/strong>,\u00a0James\u00a0Van\u00a0Der Beek<\/strong>, and Usher Raymond<\/strong> star. The flick comes from writer-director Justin Simien<\/strong>, the filmmaker behind\u00a0Dear White People<\/em>, and it generated some good buzz at Sundance this year.
\nOur own Ben Pearson caught the film there, and wrote: \u201cBad Hair<\/i>\u00a0is overflowing with ideas, and even though it doesn\u2019t devote the time to fully explore all of them, its ambition is unquestionably impressive. It\u2019s the type of movie that actually deserves the inevitable half-hour video essays that will be made about its theme<\/a>s, and I can\u2019t wait to read all of the longform pieces it will inspire.\u201d\u00a0High praise, indeed!<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best horror films make us laugh one minute, then shriek the next, only to wake up in a cold sweat some nights later; our subconscious, through nightmares, taunts us with their hidden meanings,\u201d said director Justin Simien, adding: \u201cThis is why I wrote\u00a0Bad Hair<\/i>, a satirical psychological thriller centered around a dark-skinned girl from Compton named Anna, who has everything she needs to succeed in the burgeoning music television field of Los Angeles, 1989, apart from the right \u201clook.\u201d A look decided centuries before she was born by forces beyond her control and understanding. All of this takes place against the backdrop of the New Jack Swing era, a dramatic acceleration of the assimilation of urban black culture into pop.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bad Hair<\/em> is headed to Hulu at the end of the month, but now, thanks to Neon, it\u2019s\u00a0also<\/em> going to be rolling out in drive-in theaters. The drive-in experience will take place in major markets, including\u00a0New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New Orleans, Detroit, Austin, Sacramento, and Las Vegas.
