Director Michel Gondry\u2019s 2004 film is affecting more than a decade later. Its portrayal of the grey depths of a breakup balances the more depressing moments with surreal dream sequences. The film follows Pin-Jui (Tzi Ma in the present and Hong-Chi Lee in the past), a Taiwanese man looking back on his life and attempting to repair his relationship with his daughter Angela (Christine Ko). <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a relatable and touching depiction of an immigrant\u2019s story, which Yang called a \u201cfever dream\u201d of his own father\u2019s past. What starts as a paint-by-numbers story of an estranged father and son working out their issues during a long road trip morphs into a genuinely affecting tale of family and mortality with a satisfying emotional payoff. <\/p>\n<p>Ed Harris plays the role of a father and renowned photographer, Ben, with customary elegance, but Jason Sudeikis steals the show as his son, Matt. Not only does it omit elements of the real Ron Woodroof\u2019s story, it fails to clearly define whether Rayon, the film\u2019s second lead, is transgender, a cross-dresser, or identifies in some other non-binary way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Dallas Buyers Club<\/em> does succeed in its depiction of the AIDS crisis, stigmatization that came with an HIV-positive diagnosis, and the far-reaching effects it had in the \u201880s and \u201890s. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas Buyers Club<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0provides a raw snapshot of a watershed moment. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto\u2019s Oscar-winning performances as Woodroof and Rayon, respectively, are also among the best of their careers (particularly in Leto\u2019s case)<\/span>. On July 22, 2011, Anders Behring Breivik carried out a terrorist attack in Norway that left 77 people dead and injured over 300 others. The film covers the two-pronged attack, as well as the aftermath, and Breivik\u2019s trial. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a tough film to watch because the trauma is so recent, but Greengrass\u2019s respectful approach keeps the film from being maudlin. After her attempt at Oscar bait, <em>Unbroken<\/em>, the commercially successful but non-player at awards season, Jolie works on a smaller scale with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First They Killed My Father<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It tells the true story of Luong Ung (who co-wrote the screenplay with Jolie and wrote the memoir the film is based on), whose family was one of many that suffered under the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. The film is contemplative without being boring and emotionally devastating without being manipulative. There are moments so empathetic that I\u2019m welling up a little just thinking about it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The cast is remarkable, from the three actors who play Chiron to Naomie Harris, Janelle Monae, and Oscar winner Mahershala Ali. It tells the story of Katie (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Broad Cit<\/em>y<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Abbi Jacobson) a woman who\u2019s trying to plan a surprise birthday party for her boyfriend. But as the day goes on she collides with her brother Seth (Dave Franco), a heroin addict who\u2019s using again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe loneliness inside those dark moments is almost more crippling\u2026 not being able to talk about the things; not knowing where to talk,\u201d Ryan told the Daily Dot. \u201cIf this isn\u2019t your story, then maybe you can gain a little empathy for people who are experiencing this. It follows 6-year-old Moonee and her mother Halley, played by newcomers Brooklyn Prince and Bria Vinaite, respectively. The movie is told primarily from Moonee\u2019s perspective, meaning many scenes of carefree kids finding fun wherever they can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moonee and Halley both wreak havoc in their own ways, and their put-upon building manager Bobby (Willem Dafoe) often looks out for both of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movie balances the joy of childhood and the ever-encroaching realities of adulthood in a way that is so true to life it can be hard to watch at times. <em>The Florida Project <\/em>challenges you to find sympathy for people you may normally look down on.
