“#Scrubs brand Figs apologizes for controversial ad deemed ‘insensitive’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A new ad for Figs scrubs is D-O-A, according to an angry group of medical professionals.<\/p>\n

The offending video features a young woman in hot-pink comfort scrubs and glasses reading \u201cMedical Terminology for Dummies\u201d \u2014 with the book upside down.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of doctors, nurses and medical students took to social media<\/a> Tuesday to express their outrage at the company, founded by two women \u2014 Heather Hasson and Trina Spear \u2014 for promoting what many pointed out is a negative stereotype of female doctors and medical professionals.<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles-based brand, which also makes activewear and recently designed a sneaker with New Balance, bills itself as a \u201cdisruptor\u201d in the medical app<\/a>arel space and has grown fast since its founding in 2013.<\/p>\n

The company has raised $75 million in funding, $65 million of that coming in 2018 in a Series<\/a> B round, WWD reported<\/a>. Plus, it\u2019s a favorite brand among medical influencers, who pose for pictures in the uniforms at Figs-sponsored retreats and hawk them to followers with discount codes.<\/p>\n

But medical professionals are lashing out at the company for their portrayal of women docs, specifically DOs, for being less educated or incompetent. A close-up of the model\u2019s drawstring scrubs features a mock-up hospital badge reading \u201cDO,\u201d short for \u201cDoctor of Osteopathic Medicine,\u201d a job which takes a more holistic approach to disease, as opposed to docs with MD degrees.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a female and a DO medical student, I am disgusted by how disrespectful and disheartening this ad is,\u201d wrote one objector on Twitter.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cPhysicians (both DO\/MD alike) work TIRELESSLY for the health of their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo better,\u201d commented another peeved med student<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jenny Seyfried, a VP of marketing at Figs previously told The Post, \u201cOne of the amazing benefits of social media<\/a> is that medical professionals can show their whole selves. In addition to being professionals, they\u2019re people. They watch \u2018The Bachelor\u2019 just like us.\u201d<\/p>\n

They may now reconsider being buddy-buddy with customers online.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s apology \u2014\u00a0 \u201cA lot of you guys have pointed out an insensitive video we had on our site\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009We dropped the ball and and we are so sorry\u201d \u2014 was likewise met with derision by type-As on Med Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou really need to come out with the notes on this and what the thought process was going into this,\u201d wrote one tsk-tsk-er<\/a> online. \u201cLet\u2019s call it what it is, sexist. Until you own it, no apology will be enough.\u201d\n <\/div>\n
