However, for the past seven months, there\u2019s been no Broadway shows and no Joe\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Stages, sadly, will remain dark until at least June 2021, but on Thursday the West 46th Street restaurant will flip its lights back on, and its notorious wall of flops, honoring the Broadway productions that never made a buck, will be gawked at once again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe Allen has to survive,\u201d actor Nathan Lane, who likes to nosh on Joe\u2019s comfort food between shows on matinee days, told The Post. \u201cIt\u2019s too important a landmark.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16455580\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img class=\"size-nypost-inline-default wp-image-16455580 lazyload\" alt=\"Nathan Lane\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/joe-allen-nathan-lane.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/joe-allen-nathan-lane.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/joe-allen-nathan-lane.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/joe-allen-nathan-lane.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=600 600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span>Nathan Lane<\/span><span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Never a place to make a big fuss \u2014 the wood-paneled joint has a tucked-away exterior, with only a subdued green awning to announce itself \u2014 the reopening won\u2019t have confetti cannons or a Champagne toast. Nonetheless, regulars, many of whom are in the theater community, have been excitedly booking tables for weeks, ready to return to the restaurant that\u2019s fed everybody from Ethel Merman to Andrew Rannells.<\/p>\n<p>Opened in 1965 by its eponym, a debonair gentleman who still keeps an apartment above his eatery, the hot spot\u2019s earliest years were during Broadway\u2019s Golden Age, when new musicals such as \u201cFiddler on the Roof,\u201d \u201cHello, Dolly!\u201d and \u201cCabaret\u201d starring Joel Grey were packing in crowds a few blocks away.<\/p>\n<p>Did Grey, when he was through wiping off his iconic white Emcee makeup and singing \u201cWillkommen,\u201d spend the occasional night at Joe Allen?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow about most nights!\u201d the Tony and Oscar winner, 88, told The Post of his late-60s \u201cCabaret\u201d days. \u201cThey had a jukebox with all the hits of all the theater cast albums. And when you were finished with the show, you were still up, still ready to have a beer and talk to your friends. The experience of being onstage for a couple hours was very high, and [afterward] you\u2019d see everybody you loved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The staff\u2019s hope is that love will keep them afloat, while musicals and plays can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody wants to come for the first night,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> manager Mary Hattman said of Joe\u2019s many devoted regulars. \u201cBut we don\u2019t know what that\u2019s going to turn into. Will people be back the following week?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Allen, 87, has been living out of state during the pandemic, Hattman has been the reopening ringmaster, and has spent weeks updating the restaurant\u2019s air-filtration systems, reducing the indoor capacity to 25 percent and revising the cleaning regimen. For now, Joe Allen will be open for indoor and outdoor dining, with a few design updates courtesy of architect David Rockwell, plus takeout and delivery. The hard-fought effort is <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>reciated by decades of devotees.<\/p>\n<p>Marsha Mason, the \u201cGoodbye Girl\u201d Oscar nominee and Broadway star, moved to New York in 1964 and began going to Joe\u2019s as soon as it opened. \u201cMy first show, which was \u2018Cactus Flower,\u2019 was literally around the corner,\u201d the actress, 78, told The Post. \u201cIt was fun when the English actors would come, because for some reason the English really understand <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>izing. The dancer would arrive after her evening shows, bag of clothes in tow, and fell for the restaurateur\u2019s intelligence, quiet demeanor and his Labrador retriever Alice, who would wag her tail all over the bar. As burgers sizzled, a romance bloomed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went out with Joe for a little bit during \u2018Chicago\u2019, and nobody knew that he was a warm, funny guy that really cared,\u201d Rivera, 87, said. \u201cI just want people to know that he is that guy.
