“#\u2018Walking Dead\u2019 star Jeffrey Dean Morgan talks life on the farm<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n If last month\u2019s abrupt cancellation of cable\u2019s most popular drama, \u201cThe Walking Dead,\u201d caught you off guard, you\u2019re not alone. It also surprised the show\u2019s star.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had just talked about extending my contract for a couple more years, so that\u2019s how it was left a few months ago,\u201d says Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays fan-favorite Negan on the show.<\/p>\n

Morgan says the decision to close up shop on the zombie drama came from a combination of factors, with \u201cCOVID and this [upcoming] supersized season being the two major things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although the show\u2019s Season 10 \u201cfinale\u201d (which was delayed six months due to the pandemic), finally aired last week, network AMC announced \u2014 in a bit of scheduling emblematic of these chaotic times \u2014 that six more episodes of Season 10 will air in early 2021. Then, the final Season 11 will run for 24 episodes over two years.<\/p>\n

When filming on the series<\/a> wraps next year, Morgan, 54, will be a free agent for the first time in years. He\u2019s now left to sift through the possibilities about what comes next.<\/p>\n

But first things first: Chicken coops needs to be cleaned, alpaca poop needs to be scooped and a moody emu needs to be fed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since the coronavirus hit, Morgan has been locked down on his 100-acre farm in Rhinebeck, New York, with his wife<\/a>, \u201cOne Tree Hill\u201d actor Hilarie Burton, and their two kids, a 10-year-old boy named Gus and a 2-year-old girl named George.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe farm is no joke. It\u2019s work,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m in charge of all the animals, and Hilarie is in charge of the gardening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morgan fell in love with the Hudson Valley area 10 years ago, while filming a movie in Kerhonkson. He and Burton, who were living in LA at the time, soon bought a log cabin outside Rhinebeck. They later upgraded to the farm they call \u201cMischief.\u201d (It\u2019s named after a 19th-century animal tombstone they discovered on the property.) They\u2019ve since unloaded their LA home and moved to Mischief permanently.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not good at sitting on my ass. My wife is the same way,\u201d Morgan says. \u201cLA was not conducive for us. There\u2019s always something to do here. There\u2019s no sitting around.\u201d<\/p>\n

Farming is in Morgan\u2019s blood. He grew up in Seattle, but his grandmother owned a pig farm where he used to work every summer. These days, the actor enjoys chopping firewood and tending to his menagerie of pet animals, often with \u201c100 percent Daddy\u2019s girl\u201d George in tow. Rhinebeck, he says, has become \u201cour town.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve felt at home in my entire adult life,\u201d the actor says. \u201cIt\u2019s a combination of the people and the scenery. It\u2019s a different vibe from my 20 years in LA when I didn\u2019t even know my neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n

He and his wife co-own<\/a> (along with Paul Rudd and his wife, Julie Yaeger) Samuel\u2019s Sweet Shop, a quaint candy store on Rhinebeck\u2019s main strip<\/a>. The store\u2019s former owner, Ira Gutner, was the first person Morgan met in town. When Gutner died in 2014, Morgan and his friends decided to buy the store to keep it from closing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t get free candy, but I get free coffee. That\u2019s the big perk,\u201d the actor jokes.<\/p>\n

Morgan has always been industrious. As a young man, he sold paintings and worked as an extra for films shooting in Seattle. In the early 1990s, he moved to LA to pursue acting full time.<\/p>\n

His first audition was for the role of Blackie Parrish on \u201cGeneral<\/a> Hospital.\u201d (Instead, a then-unknown John Stamos landed the gig, launching his career.) Morgan next auditioned for a low-budget Roger Corman flick called \u201cUncaged.\u201d He was cast as a pimp.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had just moved to LA, and I was driving down Hollywood Boulevard with a camera mounted on a convertible Cadillac, and I thought, \u2018Oh, my God! I\u2019ve made it!\u2019 \u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n

But true success would take another 15 years. Throughout the \u201990s and early 2000s, Morgan was cast in straight-to-DVD movies and in one-off roles on TV shows \u2014 just enough to eek out a living, but barely.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a long time and a lot of conversations had with family and friends, like, \u2018What are you doing with your life?\u2019\u201d he remembers. \u201cI was living in Hollywood in my mid-40s, and I had a roommate, and it was like, what the f \u2013 \u2013 k?\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, within two weeks in 2005, it all came together. Morgan landed juicy roles on \u201cWeeds,\u201d \u201cSupernatural\u201d and, perhaps most notably, \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since then, he\u2019s been a reliable presence on TV and movie screens. But now, as the end of his most recent job is in sight, the anxiety most every actor suffers comes creeping in again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hear \u2018The Walking Dead\u2019 is going to end, and it\u2019s like, will I ever work again, you know?\u201d Morgan says. \u201cI always think [an acting career] is going to go away because it\u2019s so hard to get.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, it seems unlikely that work will dry up for the popular star. He\u2019s exploring a Negan spinoff, featuring the onetime baseball bat-wielding villain who has of late mellowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s not over for the story of Negan,\u201d Morgan says. \u201cThere have been brief conversations. Stars and planets need to align, but I\u2019m interested in seeing where this character goes and talking about something, whether it be a show or a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another long-rumored project would involve Morgan strapp<\/a>ing on Batman\u2019s cape and cowl. In 2016, the actor played Bruce Wayne\u2019s father, Thomas, in \u201cBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.\u201d And in an alternate universe explored in the comic books, Thomas becomes Batman after his young son is killed.<\/p>\n

Morgan says that director Zack Snyder first floated the idea when the two were filming 2009\u2019s comic-book adaptation \u201cWatchmen,\u201d in which Morgan played the superhero Comedia<\/a>n.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen, when [Snyder] called with the role of Thomas Wayne, he was like, \u2018Look, it\u2019s Thomas Wayne. We\u2019ve seen him before, but there\u2019s more, Jeff, and we\u2019ll dive in at some point. It\u2019s a down-the-line thing,\u2019\u201d Morgan recalls. \u201cI said, \u2018OK, yeah, I\u2019ll go to Chicago for one night of filming and freeze my ass off, because I know, in a couple years, we\u2019re going to be talking again about something totally different.\u2019 Then it never came to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Snyder and nearly all the executives in charge of DC\u2019s film universe have since moved on, and Morgan says it\u2019s unclear if any of Snyder\u2019s down-the-line plans will ever come to fruition.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, Morgan, who has appeared in other DC films, including 2010\u2019s \u201cThe Losers,\u201d says he\u2019d love to defect to Marvel.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarvel is so on it right now, if they called with anything, I\u2019d say, \u2018That\u2019s great.\u2019\u201d
Late last month, Morgan returned to work for the first time since the pandemic struck, heading to Boston to finish a horror movie called \u201cShrine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then it\u2019s back to work on \u201cThe Walking Dead,\u201d which he says has been nearly a year-round job since he started in 2016. Besides staying employed, Morgan says his goal is to get better as an actor, which also drives him to be a better person.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll never have it figured out in front of a camera, and I\u2019ll never have it figured out in front of my wife and kids,\u201d he says. \u201cBut you gotta keep working at it.\u201d<\/p>\n
