\n Washington watch: Pelosi\u2019s Poisonous Ploy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nancy Pelosi\u2019s bill to assemble a 17-member panel prepared to invoke the 25th Amendment is a political scheme that turns \u201cthe decision over the president\u2019s health\u201d into a \u201cbattleground ripe for partisans fighting for power,\u201d warns The Federalist\u2019s Kyle Sammin<\/a>. The Constitution allows for laws creating another body (besides the Cabinet) with the power to \u00addecide that the president\u2019 health requires him to step aside, but \u201cjust because an idea may be constitutional does not mean it is good.\u201d Nearly half of Pelosi\u2019s committee would almost certainly be \u201cpartisans who already wish the president to be removed from office,\u201d with their party treating it \u201cas a way to remove a president they loathe without using the impeachment provisions of the Constitution.\u201d Since the 25th Amendment concerns \u201cinability, not unfitness,\u201d it\u2019s foolish to shift the decision to \u201cunelected, unconfirmed and likely unknown political app<\/a>ointees.\u201d Rather, \u201cCongress should keep it with the Cabinet, where it belongs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Albany journal: Senate\u2019s \u2018One of a Kind\u2019 Leader<\/strong><\/p>\n

The tributes after Joe Bruno\u2019s death this week \u201cshined a bright light\u201d on \u201can American success story that even Hollywood couldn\u2019t have scripted,\u201d reports the former state Senate majority leader\u2019s aide, John McArdle, in his eulogy at Empire Report New York<\/a>. Bruno was \u201ca force of nature \u2014 fearless and indefatigable,\u201d with \u201cthat rare ability to connect.\u201d Under him, the Senate functioned with \u201cbusiness-like efficiency,\u201d and he always sought input from members. His \u201cpartnership\u201d with Gov. George Pataki was mostly \u201cproductive,\u201d and he had a \u201cgenuine friendship\u201d with Gov. \u00adDavid Paterson \u2014 though Gov. Eliot Spitzer \u201cwas another matter. It was kill or be killed.\u201d Bruno was \u201cone of a kind,\u201d a \u201clarger than life figure, the likes of which Albany will never see again. He\u2019ll be missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Time for \u2018Ginsburg Amendment\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

To unify the conservative movement\u2019s otherwise divided factions \u201cat the expense of the Democratic left,\u201d Deroy Murdock suggests at Fox News<\/a>, all Republicans should pledge to support a \u201cGinsburg Amendment\u201d to \u201censhrine a nine-seat US Supreme Court\u201d in the Constitution. The left tends to ignore the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg\u2019s \u201cfervent wish\u201d that the high court remain at nine justices; a pledge would force every politician to decide whether to protect the Supreme Court\u2019s \u00adintegrity or \u201cstand against Ginsburg and leave SCOTUS as vulnerable as a Butterball turkey to being stuffed with new members.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: Beware Biden\u2019s AG Pick<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tana Ganeva warns at Reason <\/a>that insiders believe Joe Biden may well name Sally Yates as attorney general<\/a> if he wins. That\u2019s a concern, because while \u201cBiden claims to strongly back criminal-justice reform . . . that\u2019s hard to square with his record.\u201d It\u2019s telling that Yates is favored over \u201cVarnita Gupta, another qualified candidate whose history is far more appealing to civil libertarians.\u201d That\u2019s because \u201cYates\u2019 Obama-era history at the Department of Justice is troubling, particularly where it comes to carrying out the former president\u2019s clemency initiative.\u201d Deborah Leff, a top criminal-justice reformer, quit over the slow pace of that initiative and \u201cwent on to criticize Yates for turning down recommendations and blocking the Pardon Office\u2019s access to White House counsel to contest her decisions.\u201d Among those blocked from clemency was \u201cAlice Marie Johnson, a 65-year-old grandmother,\u201d whose life-without-parole sentence (for a first-time, nonviolent offense) President Trump would later commute.<\/p>\n

Election alert: Make Sure Military Votes Count<\/strong><\/p>\n

Active-duty troops have voted absentee for more than a century, but some fear \u201cmany of those votes won\u2019t be counted this election,\u201d reveals combat nurse Lynne Blankenbeker in the Washington Examiner<\/a>. Voting is a chance to honor their \u201cservice of protecting and defending the Constitution,\u201d for which they \u201cswore an oath.\u201d So officials must slow down and \u201ccommit to waiting for the final count.\u201d \u201cDelays in state ballot preparation and postal delays should not negate a service member\u2019s valid vote that has been submitted through a properly obtained and executed ballot.\u201d Slowing down the process is a way to guarantee \u201cthe safety and integrity of our elections.\u201d After all, \u201cevery hero\u2019s voice should be heard, and every hero\u2019s vote should be counted.\u201d<\/p>\n
