But the official word from both countries shows little recognition of any longstanding friendship. Three days ago, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman <strong>Zhao Lijian<\/strong> dismissed <strong>Meng Wanzhou<\/strong>\u2018s arrest in Vancouver as an \u201cattempt to gang up on China\u201d that is \u201ctotally futile and counterproductive.\u201d The next day, Zhao said the ongoing chill is \u201cnot what China wants to see,\u201d but that it\u2019s up to the Canadian side to make things right. Yesterday, Zhao accused a\u00a0\u201chypocritical and weak\u201d Canada of withholding evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Only a few days ago, <strong>Bob Rae<\/strong>, Canada\u2019s new ambassador at the United Nations, forcefully opposed China\u2019s arbitrary detention of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor at the UN <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Assembly (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AshishSPradhan\/status\/1314683566870204419\"><strong>watch Rae\u2019s remarks<\/strong><\/a>). Meanwhile, a federal snapshot of Canada-China relations <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadainternational.gc.ca\/china-chine\/bilateral_relations_bilaterales\/index.aspx?lang=eng\">paints a rosy picture<\/a> of the myriad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>, economic and academic connections tying the two nations together\u2014even as the feds\u2019 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/destinations\/china\"><strong>official travel advice<\/strong><\/a> warns that visitors should beware of Chinese authorities who could accuse them of \u201cendangering national security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Globe and Mail<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-canada-china-mark-50-years-of-diplomatic-ties\/\">reports<\/a> the\u00a0influential <strong>Canada-China Business Council<\/strong> marked the half-century of diplomatic relations with its annual general meeting at a Four Seasons ballroom in Beijing. The\u00a0<em>Globe<\/em> says the audience loudly <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lauded Chinese state officials who lambasted Canada\u2019s arrest of Meng, and offered only silence to Trade Minister <strong>Mary Ng<\/strong> and Ambassador <strong>Dominic Barton<\/strong>\u2018s rebuttals. The dinner was sponsored by the very same Huawei at which Meng served as chief financial officer.<\/p>\n<p>There are silver linings. Barton, who was granted virtual consular access to the two imprisoned Michaels last week, secured similar access to <strong>Robert Schellenberg<\/strong>, the Canadian convicted of drug crimes who\u2019s been sentenced to death. The feds have repeatedly called for\u00a0Schellenberg\u2019s clemency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But China won\u2019t like this:<\/strong>\u00a0This morning, a phalanx of parliamentarians and non-profit reps will hold a press conference demanding that Trudeau\u2019s government \u201cconvert words of concern into actions\u201d on what they call a human rights crisis in Hong Kong. <strong>Irwin Cotler<\/strong>, a longtime Liberal cabinet minister, will stand alongside NDP MP <strong>Jenny Kwan<\/strong> and Conservative Sen. <strong>Leo Housakos<\/strong>. Dozens of their colleagues have signed a joint statement that calls for\u00a0Magnitsky sanctions for Chinese officials and asylum for <strong>persecuted Hong Kongers<\/strong>. China has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/video\/7396505\/china-lodges-complaint-with-canada-over-trudeaus-remarks-on-hong-kong-xinjiang\">formally complained<\/a> about Trudeau\u2019s remarks on HK.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian International Trade Tribunal <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decisions.citt-tcce.gc.ca\/citt-tcce\/a\/en\/item\/486717\/index.do\">ruled<\/a> that certain countries were dumping hot-rolled deformed steel concrete reinforcing bar\u2014what you might know as rebar\u2014on the Canadian market. The feds will\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/international-trade-tribunal\/news\/2020\/10\/tribunal-continues-findingconcrete-reinforcing-bar-from-china-korea-and-turkey.html\">slap anti-dumping and countervailing duties<\/a> on those imports. Among the offending countries: <strong>China<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re No. 2!<\/strong>\u00a0Yesterday,\u00a0<em>Toronto Star\u00a0<\/em>data showed\u00a0Ottawa was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EdTubb\/status\/1316489995759374337\/photo\/1\">second in the province<\/a> in a rolling seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents. A surging virus in the nation\u2019s capital is no surprise to researchers at the CHEO Research Institute and the University of Ottawa. For months, they\u2019ve tracked the \u201csignal increase\u201d\u2014a fancy term for measured volume\u2014of virus in <strong>Ottawa\u2019s wastewater<\/strong>. Their readings offer <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/613covid.ca\/wastewater\/#\"><strong>near-realtime data<\/strong><\/a> that mirrors the coronavirus\u2019s community spread.\u00a0 Said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.ctvnews.ca\/we-re-strapped-to-a-rocket-right-now-alarm-at-sky-high-covid-19-levels-in-ottawa-s-sewage-1.5145059\">one researcher<\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019re strapped to a rocket right now, unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The saga of disgraced former senator <strong>Don Meredith<\/strong> has now hit the taxpayer. Meredith resigned in 2017 amid repeated claims of harassment in the workplace. The Senate recently accepted all the recommendations in a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sencanada.ca\/content\/sen\/committee\/432\/CIBA\/Briefs\/Report_CIBA_E.pdf\">report<\/a> submitted by retired judge Louise Otis, who assessed the various claims. The upper chamber will pay\u00a0<strong>$498,000<\/strong> in compensation to nine of Meredith\u2019s former staff members.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ejection day:<\/strong>\u00a0You\u2019ve got one final chance to bid on a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gcsurplus.ca\/mn-eng.cfm?snc=wfsav&amp;sc=enc-bid&amp;scn=372439&amp;lcn=520946&amp;lct=L&amp;srchtype=&amp;lci=&amp;str=1&amp;lotnf=1&amp;frmsr=1&amp;sf=ferm-clos\"><strong>real-life ejection seat<\/strong><\/a> that once called a <strong>CF-101 Voodoo<\/strong> home (watch a similar model in action <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dkbUfEZ2cHI\">here<\/a>).
