While in desktop mode, Windows 10 allows you to use the Start menu in a full-screen mode (like the Start menu in tablet mode) or in a more traditional way that only covers part of the screen. Here\u2019s how to change how it works.<\/p>\n

Depending on how you have your Start Menu configured, a full-screen Start menu looks something like this. As expected, it covers the entire screen (but not the taskbar), and you can change between a \u201cpinned tiles\u201d view and an \u201call app<\/a>s\u201d view using the buttons in the upper-left corner.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a lot like Windows 8\u2019s Start screen\u2014a big full-screen canvas where you can place all your shortcut tiles.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

To configure whether you see the full-screen Start menu in desktop mode or not, you\u2019ll need to make a change in Windows Settings.<\/p>\n

First, open \u201cSettings\u201d by clicking the \u201cStart\u201d menu and selecting the \u201cGear\u201d icon on the left. (You can also press Windows+I.)<\/p>\n

When Settings opens, click \u201cPersonalization\u201d on the main screen.<\/p>\n

In Personalization, select \u201cStart\u201d from the sidebar to open the \u201cStart\u201d settings.<\/p>\n

In Start menu settings, locate the switch labeled \u201cUse Start Full Screen.\u201d If you\u2019d like to use the Start menu full screen in desktop mode, set this switch to \u201cOn.\u201d If you don\u2019t want Start to cover the entire screen when you open it in desktop mode, set this switch to \u201coff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Note that this setting does not affect the full-screen Start menu in tablet mode. While your PC is in tablet mode, it will always show a full-screen Start menu.<\/p>\n

To quickly disable tablet mode, open the \u201cAction Center\u201d by clicking or tapping the notifications button in the far corner of the taskbar. When the Action Center menu pops up, select the \u201cTablet Mode\u201d button.<\/p>\n

You can also disable turn off tablet mode completely in Settings > System > Tablet.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t have to use a full-screen Start menu to get more room for shortcuts. If you\u2019d like to use a larger Start menu without having it occupy the full screen, you can easily resize the Start menu by clicking and dragging the Start menu\u2019s edges.<\/p>\n
