\n Conservative: \u2018Nothing To See\u2019 of Biden<\/strong><\/p>\n

After The Post\u2019s story about a Burisma adviser\u2019s e-mail thanking Hunter Biden for setting up a meeting with his then-veep dad, Joe Biden called \u201can early lid on his day\u2019s activities,\u201d reports Dominic Green at The Spectator<\/a>. \u201cFor months he has refused to answer questions about Hunter, Burisma and Ukraine. There is nothing to see or hear of Biden.\u201d Meanwhile, Facebook<\/a> and Twitter won\u2019t even let you share the Post story. Yet \u201canyone with a brain can see\u201d the only reason Burisma would employ Hunter is \u201cto buy influence with his father.\u201d There are \u201creasonable questions\u201d for Joe Biden, but he\u2019s \u201cdoing his utmost to avoid them\u201d \u2014 and \u201csucceeding\u201d with the help of the \u201cDemocratic media.\u201d The Internet was supposed to \u201cdemocratize information, but we now see that it has privatized it. . . . Soon, there will be nothing to see at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tech beat: \u2018Declare War Right Back\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Facebook and Twitter\u2019s attempts to \u201cthrottle\u201d a \u201cblockbuster\u201d Post story about Joe Biden\u2019s son Hunter was \u201cnothing less than a brazen \u00adattempt by corrupt Big Tech partisans\u201d to \u201csteal the election from the American people,\u201d fume The Federalist\u2019s Ben Domenech and Sean \u00adDavis<\/a>. It\u2019s a \u201cdeclaration of war on America\u2019s electoral process by the unelected tech oligarch class\u201d \u2014 even as they make use \u201cof the monopoly power and federal legal immunity\u201d provided by Congress and federal antitrust authorities. It\u2019s time for lawmakers to say \u201cenough is enough.\u201d At the very least, Republicans, who represent \u201cthe only major political party left\u201d willing to defend the First Amendment, need \u201cto \u00addeclare war right back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Media watch: Baseless Hits on Post Story<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Twitter, Kyle Smith points out<\/a> that \u201cHunter Biden hasn\u2019t denied he dropped off his laptop\u201d at the store that The Post\u2019s expos\u00e9 \u2014 which cited material found on the computer \u2014 suggested he did. \u201cNo wonder\u201d critics are griping only that the story app<\/a>eared \u201cin a right-wing billionaire\u2019s paper.\u201d And though it may seem strange that info from the laptop came via Rudy Giuliani, \u201ctrue information winds up in reporters\u2019 hands in all sorts of weird ways. What matters is the truth (and that it was \u00adlegally obtained).\u201d If \u201csomebody at Kinko\u2019s gave [Democratic operative] David Axelrod a cache of genuine Trump documents someone left on a copier by mistake and Axe gave them to the Times, there would be zero hesitancy to publish.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Censorship Will Backfire<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no credible reason\u201d for Facebook and Twitter\u2019s \u201csuppression\u201d of The Post\u2019s Hunter Biden story, rail the editors at National Review<\/a>. \u201cScores of dramatic scoops\u201d based on \u201cfaulty information\u201d from \u201cunknown sources\u201d have \u201cturned out to be incorrect,\u201d yet \u201cnot once\u201d did the social-media \u00adgiants \u201ccensor any of those pieces.\u201d Twitter users can still share stories based on the Christopher Steele dossier, though it was likely based on disinformation from a foreign power. Nor has Twitter offered evidence that The Post\u2019s information was obtained illegally \u2014 while no \u201csimilar standard was applied when The New York Times published [President] Trump\u2019s tax returns,\u201d a case where it\u2019s likely someone did break the law. Big Tech\u2019s squelching of stories like this are doomed to \u201cbackfire\u201d in any case, the editors note, damaging their reputation and inviting regulation. \u201cMostly, however, it just makes the story they\u2019re trying to suppress a far bigger deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: The Folly of Policing Content<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Post\u2019s \u201cattention-catching\u201d report of a \u201csmoking-gun e-mail\u201d suggesting Hunter Biden introduced a Ukrainian businessman to his \u201cVP dad\u201d merits attention, argues Reason\u2019s Robby Soave <\/a>\u2014 not least because of questions about its \u201caccuracy, reliability and sourcing.\u201d Yet \u201cmany in the media are choosing not just to ignore the story, but to actively \u00adencourage others to suppress\u201d discussion of it. When The New York Times\u2019 Maggie Haberman and Politico\u2019s Jake Sherman criticized it, they \u201cfaced thunderous denunciation on Twitter from Democratic partisans simply for discussing\u201d it. As for Facebook, it may be \u201cwithin its rights\u201d to act against \u201ccontent it believes\u201d misleading, but that\u2019s \u201ca tough standard to enforce evenly,\u201d particularly when the firm appears \u201cmore concerned about bad reporting\u201d from right-leaning than left-leaning outlets.<\/p>\n
