“#’Central Ave.’ hosts shake up pop culture, entertainment news<\/a><\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n \u201cCentral Ave.\u201d has pulled off that rare feat in television \u2014 carving out a unique niche in a crowded, competitive genre.<\/p>\n

Co-created by Will Packer and Monique Chenault, \u201cCentral Ave.,\u201d which had a five-week test run on Fox stations last fall, recently launched into national syndication with co-hosts Julissa Bermudez and Sanya Richards-Ross.<\/p>\n

Since premiering in its new iteration Sept. 26, it\u2019s\u00a0reconfigured the playbook regarding entertainment magazines \u2014 both in front of and behind the camera.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re two women of color representing a show format that\u2019s been the same for so long,\u201d says Bermudez, 37, who grew up in Queens. \u201cAnd to have that diversity along with Will Packer and Monique Chenault, who moved from \u2018Entertainment Tonight\u2019 to be our showrunner\u00a0 \u2026 we want people to know that this is a fresh take on the entertainment newsmagazine show they haven\u2019t seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bermudez and Richards-Ross, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, did not know each other before auditioning for \u201cCentral Ave.,\u201d airing Saturday from 7-8 p.m. on Ch. 9 and midnight-1 a.m. on Ch. 5.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were put in pairs with different people [to audition] and when we were paired together there was instant chemistry,\u201d says Bermudez. \u201cWe literally had our fingers crossed hoping that we were the ones to get the phone call. We\u2019ve had a lot of time to build on that relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their interactions on-camera help put the show\u2019s mix of celebrity news and explorations of social<\/a> issues into context, with assistance from correspondents Van Lathan, Kennedy-Rue McCollough, Sloane Glass, Melissa McCarty, Neima Abdulahi and Zack Greenburg.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think of it as an amazing opportunity to work on a show that people want to watch,\u201d says Richards-Ross, 35. \u201cPeople want to know more than just the headlines or the little excerpt they see on social media. We provide that \u2026 with a unique perspective when we\u2019re telling our stories to different communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Monique and Will wanted to bring was an identity and authentic voices,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019re really about sharing stories that sometimes don\u2019t get covered by the media \u2014 and about allowing communities to be seen and heard.\u201d<\/p>\n

A recent show, for instance, took a deep dive into the OJ Simpson murder trial on its 25th anniversary.\u00a0 \u201cWe had people messaging us saying, \u2018You guys broke it down in a way I hadn\u2019t thought of,\u2019 \u201d says Bermudez. Saturday night\u2019s show will feature her interview with DJ Khaled, who shares his thoughts on developments surrounding his friends Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez (she accused him of shooting her).\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re taking a more investigative angle,\u201d says Bermudez. \u201cSome people don\u2019t realize how much entertainment news and culture affects our daily lives, and how we\u2019re influenced by these celebrities whose lives we follow and whose headlines we follow on social media. Everyone seems to know what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want it to come across that it\u2019s so serious that you can\u2019t sit through it,\u201d says Richards-Ross. \u201cYou get that balance between straight-up news and headlines and quick hits. Last week we were talking about Mariah Carey and her book and how everyone was talking about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll walk away feeling like you\u2019ve gotten a little bit of social consciousness and what\u2019s the latest on your favorite celebrity,\u201d she says, \u201cand maybe something else you didn\u2019t think you would care so much about.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
