\n There\u2019s a 50 percent chance we\u2019re living in a computer simulation, according to new analysis.<\/p>\n

A scientist from Columbia University in the US claims it\u2019s not too far-fetched to suggest our reality is a computer simulation created by a highly advanced civilization.<\/p>\n

This may sound like the plot of the \u201cThe Matrix\u201d or even The Sims video game<\/a> but it\u2019s actually based on work from researchers from renowned universities.<\/p>\n

Astronomer David Kipping from Columbia University came to the 50\/50 conclusion after re-evaluating a 2003 paper by the University of Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom.<\/p>\n

In that paper,<\/a> aptly named \u2018Are We Living in a Computer Simulation?\u2019, Bostrom theorised that it\u2019s likely we are living in one.<\/p>\n

He also suggested that civilizations usually go extinct before they become developed enough to create their own reality or just don\u2019t have an interest in creating one.<\/p>\n

Kipping looked into these three concepts, which are known as Bostrom\u2019s \u201ctrilemma.\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned the trilemma into a dilemma by collapsing the last two points into one.<\/p>\n

He then theorized that we are either living in a simulation or we aren\u2019t so the chances are 50\/50.<\/p>\n

However, the scientist thinks if humans ever create advanced simulation tech then the chances of us living in a simulation ourselves will be higher.<\/p>\n

Kipping told Scientific American:<\/a> \u201cThen you are only left with the simulation hypothesis.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe day we invent that technology<\/a>, it flips the odds from a little bit better than 50-50 that we are real to almost certainly we are not real, according to these calculations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other scientists have argued that the right computer tech could spot a \u201cglitch in the Matrix\u201d and confirm the theory within decades.<\/p>\n

Kipping does still have doubt and concerns over people trying to prove that we\u2019re just characters in a computer-simulated world.<\/p>\n

He told Scientific American: \u201cIt\u2019s arguably not testable as to whether we live in a simulation or not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it\u2019s not falsifiable, then how can you claim it\u2019s really science<\/a>?\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
