“#Anya Taylor-Joy makes her move in ‘The Queen’s Gambit’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Anya Taylor-Joy says she has a lot in common with Beth Harmon, the chess prodigy she plays in \u201cThe Queen\u2019s Gambit,\u201d a new miniseries<\/a> on Netflix.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could see a lot of myself in Beth,\u201d Taylor-Joy, 24, tells The Post. \u201cI thought she\u2019s an inherently lonely person. And I really felt that, especially when I was very little. Her way of coping with it is that she found chess. I found acting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could see a lot of connections with what it takes to be really good at chess and what it takes to do well in this [entertainment] industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Premiering Friday (Oct. 23), \u201cThe Queen\u2019s Gambit\u201d is set in the 1950s and \u201960s and is based on a 1983 novel<\/a> of the same name. It follows Beth as she is sent to an orphanage at age 9 after losing her family to a fatal car crash. There, the withdrawn girl soon discovers a rare talent for the game<\/a> of chess, and rises to the top of the world\u2019s players \u2014 all while struggling with an addiction to tranquilizers.<\/p>\n

Taylor-Joy, who grew up in America, England and Argentina, says she wasn\u2019t very familiar with the world of competitive chess before \u201cThe Queen\u2019s Gambit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI really didn\u2019t know a lot, so I feel really lucky that my introduction to what \u2014 to me \u2014 was a secret world came from people that are revered as chess scholars,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen I was first approached [about the role] there was no script<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I devoured the book in one sitting. And then I was trying to calm myself down, because I was so connected to the character and very excited to tell the story\u2026I think I lived Beth more than I\u2019ve ever lived a character before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although she\u2019s not a chess prodigy, Taylor-Joy\u2019s story mirrors Beth\u2019s in that she\u2019s risen to the top of her field at a young age. Not yet 25, she\u2019s already starred in hit horror movies helmed by auteur directors (such as Robert Eggers\u2019 \u201cThe Witch\u201d and M. Night Shyamalan\u2019s \u201cSplit\u201d), Jane Austen adaptations (\u201cEmma\u201d) and popular shows (\u201cPeaky Blinders\u201d).<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a very crazy 2019 where I played Emma and I had a day off, then I went on to do [the upcoming film] \u2018Last Night in Soho\u2019 with Edgar Wright. Then I had a day off, and then it was time to play Beth,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was surprisingly the [character] that needed the least amount of encouragement to come out,\u201d she says. \u201cI wish that I was somebody who had the foresight to go, \u2018This is what I want to do now,\u2019 or \u2018I want to do something in this time period,\u2019 but I\u2019ve always picked jobs based on a feeling and on whether I think I\u2019m the right person to tell that person\u2019s story.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really felt like I could tell Beth\u2019s with a degree of sensitivity and empathy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor-Joy has a slew of high-profile projects, including another movie with Eggers (\u201cThe Northman\u201d opposite Nicole Kidman and Ethan Hawke). And, this week, the news broke<\/a> that she\u2019ll play a young version of Charlize Theron\u2019s iconic \u201cMad Max: Fury Road\u201d character Furiosa in a spinoff prequel co-starring Chris Hemsworth.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very excited, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for the people that originated this world,\u201d she says. \u201cI was swept up in the magic of \u2018Mad Max\u2019 along with everyone else, and I just have the deepest gratitude and I\u2019m so humbled that I\u2019m being allowed to join this adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n
