\n \u201cTeen Wolf\u201d alum Dylan O\u2019Brien is finally opening up about a horrific March 2016 accident on the set of \u201cMaze Runner: The Death Cure.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien, 29, said he was \u201ca mess\u201d and \u201cfelt so f\u2013king broken\u201d following the mishap, which occurred while filming a stunt<\/a>. The movie was delayed as he recovered from his injuries, which he has not elaborated on but reportedly required reconstructive surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of things in my life were changing and were difficult at that time. A lot of things in my career were changing too. I was fighting it for a while, and freaking out that I felt so f\u2013king broken,\u201d he recently told Deadline<\/a>. \u201cI had to accept that and sink into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

While promoting his new mystery, \u201cThe Education Of Fredrick Fitzell,\u201d O\u2019Brien said he connected strongly with that film\u2019s script<\/a>. Directed by Christopher MacBride, the movie tells the story of a young man, played by O\u2019Brien, who faces \u201can existential crisis\u201d and \u201cliterally and metaphorically journeys into his past,\u201d according to the official description released when O\u2019Brien\u2019s casting was announced<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I read it, I felt like I was going through a quarter-life crisis. I had been allowing myself to be in this pretty f\u2013ked up, lost place,\u201d said O\u2019Brien, who was 24 at the time of his on-set accident in Vancouver, Canada. \u201cAnd then this script came along and I thought it was crazy how much it was me at that moment. The film surrounds a guy who is baulking at the next stage of his life, he\u2019s dealing with tremendous loss, and at that time in his life he reached back, to a specific night. I liked that idea. It\u2019s a very human story.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien elaborated that the emotions he felt following his accident correlated to a degree with those he experienced while making the new movie. He added that his recovery was not a quick or easy one.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was definitely one of the pieces. It was a concoction of s\u2013t,\u201d he said. \u201cI had a rough and long road back from that, probably more than people realize. It was a very private and personal thing for me. I was going through that s\u2013t for long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the \u201cThe Education of Fredrick Fitzell\u201d \u2014 which will be released next year \u2014 was cathartic, saying, \u201cI used it as an outlet, to lean into the mess I was in at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien previously revealed in 2017<\/a> that getting back to work was conducive to powering on.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really helped a lot, actually,\u201d he said while promoting the action flick \u201cAmerican Assassin\u201d at the time. \u201cIt sort of became in a way that step that I needed in recovery to know I could do it again, I could still be on a set and things could be done in the right way, too, and things could be done safely in the way that they\u2019re supposed to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien can also be seen in the apocalyptic Paramount film \u201cLove and Monsters,\u201d out today.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
